My brother was wondering what effect if any will the McNally Fire have on the fish in the Kern River? The fire has burned on both sides of the river and North & South.

Lets look at it this way.  When you set up an aquarium, you use charcoal as a filter.  When wood burns it becomes like charcoal.  When a fire burns near a creek/river, the burned wood that ends up in the river acts like a filter and cleans up the river.  Just another reason why fire is a good thing.

Usually the streams become muddier from the runoff due to erosion of the barren top soil. I saw an article this week on how they USFS is already seeding and creating little mini dams in the Colorado burn area to stop some of the erosion of the top soil. Along with the soil the streams also get polluted with fertilizer from any cultivated land nearby.

I'll see if I can find the article and post it. There is an article I posted in the Conservation forum about runoff and how it is effecting a lake in Iowa. The chickens are coming home to roost as they say.
