Military kids get free fishing trips

When Jan Fisher was contacted about making a donation to "Friends of Rollo," she had an idea.
Why not merge "Friends of Rollo," a nonprofit kids fishing organization, with radio talk show host Roger Hedgecock's "Operation Homefront," she thought. The idea would be to gather donations to take the kids of military families on a half-day fishing trip.
Fisher, who owns Atlas Footing Repair Inc. in El Cajon, quickly gathered 12 of her clients and vendors, who chipped in $2,300 for the military kids' fishing trips.
John Collins, a volunteer with "Friends of Rollo," said the plan is to offer free half-day trips in Southern California to the sons and daughters, ages 8-16, of our military overseas. The trips will include rods and reels, tackle and food. All the kids have to do is show up, Collins said.
"We want to get the word out that we have businesses and sport boats ready to step up and make these trips happen," said Collins, whose wife, Judy, is a paid fund-raiser for "Friends of Rollo." "We have boats from San Diego (the Vagabond and others) to Dana Wharf (the Fury, the Game Fish and the Sea Horse) ready to take kids fishing. We want to show what the community of San Diego can do for the military families of the men and women who are fighting overseas."
Collins said eligible families should call "Friends of Rollo" at (858) 495-0786 or view the Web site, http://www.friendsofrollo.com. The organization also is looking for corporate sponsors for future kids fishing trips. Fisher may be contacted at Atlas Footing Repair Inc., at (619) 442-7900.
