I got my Antelope south of Alturas on BLM land. I had spotted the buck about mid-morning on the second day in some pinon with about 6 does. I was able to sneak within about 250 yards of them but they bedded down. I thought fine, I'll wait them out. Two and half hours later they got up. There was now way I could get closer and having missed one the day before at a closer range I decided to try and get closer. They fed to the end of a finger of trees and I back tracked and tried to work my way through that finger of trees. Well as I was crab-walking my way through those trees I failed to notice a young buck about 50 yards away from me. I thought great the jig is up. Sure enough he started trotting towards the other goats. But, as the rut was in progress, the big buck would have nothing to do with this little guy being around. I thought this would draw the big guy to me but instead the bigger buck chased the little guy clean out of site. Great. At least the does were still there. I figured if I got close to them the big guy would eventually return. Before I cold get closer the does busted me and booked. But they went the opposite way the buck had run. Just as they got out of site the buck returned looking for them, but he was now about 4-500 yards out. No chance. Wait, I have a white atm slip in my wallet. I pulled this out and whistled to get the bucks attention and when he looked at me I waved the paper ( I was in full camo). He came at towards me at a run and I collected him from about 75 yards away. Nice 14" goat.
My Dad's came from up on the "Garden" as it is called up there. We struck out on some private ground we had permission to hunt through some friends in Davis Creek the third morning. We decided to check out some areas on the National Forest land during the afternoon and return to the private ground that evening to see if the goats had returned to our friends place. We drove towards a little reservoir and saw a goat about 200 yards away but was unable to get a shot. He started walking away but we could not catch up. I noticed he was walking towards an area we had driven earlier so I decided to circle around and see if we could find him. We did. He was a little too far away right then but as we watched him he started paralleling us and actually got closer. At about 250 yards away he stopped broadside and told Dad to take him. It was funny to see how shook my Dad was. he was shaking like a leaf. Well, he shot and the goat went down. As he turned to shake my hand I looked at the goat and he was up and running. Dad was able to get him a short distance later. It had 12 inch horns and my Dad was pumped. We had them both mounted. It was a hunt I will never forget. sorry about the length.

Good story Monty. A great hunt. Sounds like you were hunting very close to where I wish I could get drawn for. I have access to property on the north side of 139 south of Alturas. That big prairie ends right at the property line and the land starts to climb on our side. I have been up there numerous times and watched the antelope running that prairie and a few times, they have been on our side. But, of course, I have never been drawn for it. But, it is still cool to sit in the shade of a tree and just watch them.
Again, good job and good tale.

Going scouting up there this weekend for antelope.  Not sure where, but hope to talk to a biologist this week.  Should be fun.
