reasonable request! But, most of the Mt. Quail I've encountered have been in the Sierra's and/or other high country areas?
Been my experience, that, in the "A" zone, most quail to be found, are "Valley's"!

I meant Quail Zone A, not Deer zone A (coast ). I was thinking Inyo and Mono counties! Thanks! Any general areas?

Anywhere you find water up and off the valley floor should do. If you are adventurous push the timberline and hunt blue grouse. Creeks are ok but high springs are almost a sure things until it rains.

I have found Mountain Quail in Kennedy Meadows in the past, but that has been some time ago.At one of my hot spots I killed my first limit of Mountain Quail last year, but we are talking about hiking up to 5000-7000 ft to get to them and chukar. Good luck

Anywhere past Kennedy meadows is good. Last year Troy Meadows was pretty good for me just get up high. Lack of rain this year has really made it slow. Went two weeks ago and did not see any. I am heading back up there this weekend trying a couple more spots.

There are mountain quail in the Los Padres National Forest. It take a bit to find them but they are there. I have gotten a few but never a limit. And they seem to cover some of the same locations as the valley quail. I would suggest you get a forest service map of the Los Padres Nationa Forest and try around some of the campgrounds hiking back in on some of the trails. However with all the fires last year and this in the areas it might not be any good and they are closing down some of the areas because of the fire danger. Check the Los Padres National Forest web site for information. Also you will probably have to wait until the reqular season opens in October.

I just love hunting those birds, it's where I get my handle "mountainbird". I hunt them all over Los Padres. I use a Primos call and it works pretty good most of the time. I shot 2 limits in Lockwood Valley last year but I really had to work hard for them. Good luck!

Thats why it is called hunting and not a trip to safeway. Better luck next time. The hardest to hunt upland game I believe.

Fe,
We didnt see any but we called em and they kept answering us while coming closer, but they never came outa the bushes. My bro did such a good job calling the toms that a bobcat came within 20 ft of him (we were both wearing Ghilly suits).
