We came in from the 15 fwy on hwy 78. (We saw about 20 turkey out on private land about 15 miles from Santa Ysabel.) We tried to get into the canyon from Santa Ysabel where the 78 and 79 meet but everything is locked. We then proceeded toward Julian and couldn't find any access into the canyon. Eventually we made our way down Eagle Peak Rd. We drove all the way down Eagle Peak Rd to 33.002467,-116.71547. All roads were locked at this point and the terrain didn't look like good pig area. We came back north and checked out 33.027501, -116.688734. This area looked promising but I think that it is over accessed by park visitors. Since we were already parked we decided to walk north east up the canyon. The only thing we found were a couple of rabbits. After a few hours we got back in the truck and tried to access the canyon from the north west side. Every gate was locked on this side too. We even stopped by the fire department for info on access but they were no help. I think that it's going to be a long walk in and out every time you hunt this area. Next time I plan on just parking at the Inaja parking area and doing the walking. There's just not enough access to our public lands.
It was supposed to snow in Julian but we had good weather all day. Good luck anyone else that is going to try this area.
