We came in from the 15 fwy on hwy 78. (We saw about 20 turkey out on private land about 15 miles from Santa Ysabel.) We tried to get into the canyon from Santa Ysabel where the 78 and 79 meet but everything is locked. We then proceeded toward Julian and couldn't find any access into the canyon. Eventually we made our way down Eagle Peak Rd. We drove all the way down Eagle Peak Rd to 33.002467,-116.71547. All roads were locked at this point and the terrain didn't look like good pig area. We came back north and checked out 33.027501, -116.688734. This area looked promising but I think that it is over accessed by park visitors. Since we were already parked we decided to walk north east up the canyon. The only thing we found were a couple of rabbits. After a few hours we got back in the truck and tried to access the canyon from the north west side. Every gate was locked on this side too. We even stopped by the fire department for info on access but they were no help. I think that it's going to be a long walk in and out every time you hunt this area. Next time I plan on just parking at the Inaja parking area and doing the walking. There's just not enough access to our public lands.

It was supposed to snow in Julian but we had good weather all day. Good luck anyone else that is going to try this area.

its raining now here in the IE so more than likely the gates where closed due to incoming weather. Ive hunted those area many times and never seen any. The turkeys tend to stay on the private lands or areas you cant shoot them. Its hard down there good luck

Now you know why only a few hunters have had success in east SD county. Lots of private land, lots of hiking, lots of time and effort. I'm a big fan of DIY (pig) hunting, but at some point you have to weigh the time, effort, money and diminishing returns. Good luck to you.

Turkey.jpg 45/70 I am with you I have gone scouting with my son in that area but all I find is private land I have gone scouting in two other parts off of the 79 and have heard turkey but not seen them. My son and I stayed put for about an hour a couple of times but they never came out thick brush was everywhere we tired to go find them. It's a lot of scouting now that turkey season is over we are going to try for quaill and or dove my son just needs to pick up his grades he came home with a C on his math test if he can get a better grade on his make up test this week and if it's better we are going to scout for dove and quaill next weekend that is if he can get a least a B as I tell him school first hunting later. I went scouting for two days last weekend and found nothing in other areas south of 8 and north of 8 but I did find some cool spots with running streams that I did not even know where around the area. I put a picture of the turkeys I saw on private land behind them we saw some buck and doe's just standing around looking at us like we are here and you can't do a thing about it, it was kind of funny. Pond.jpg A picture of the stream I found saw some fish but not much of anything else.

Sounds like you hit all the areas that I had treaded. You're right about having to hoof it for a good distance before finding anything. I have done any where from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours out from the nearest road and found the best signs and animal activity. Sometimes, I feel like I am part Mountain Goat, lol!

The hog signs, I've seen have been more south in the Descanso area. But that has gone cold too. People have been saying they are hugging the El Capitan Reservior and surrounding reservation land. There was a pretty recent news article about 30 feral pigs caught in the Vista irrigation reservior near Lake Henshaw and Warner Springs areas. Problem is, zeroing down the public land that can get you the best shot of success near the water sources on private land.

I was planning on going out today, but I heard that area was going to get snow. I don't have snow tires or chains. I heard Friday might get some rain and some chance of snow. Maybe then.

Hope this helps.

Lakerfan01 We did hear some quail fly out of the bushes but couldn't see them because of the trees.

45/70 I was calling them but in the areas I was in the brush was so thick it would have taken me an hour just to go a few hundred yard. Well like I said now we (if grades go up) are going to look other areas. I am going to camp Pendleton when they open for upland bird hunting they are having maneuvers this weekend I was told, but I think they have waterfowl open for huting have you ever gone on base?

Hey, I saw Pendleton only allows Active/Reserve, Retirees and DOD. I remember before they used to let disable vets as members of the sportman's club. Is that still the case? I have 12years of active duty under my belt, got out and now have a Disabled hunting license.

I know the Army base Hunter Liggett will let me on. But would a Marine club let me join, since I am a Marine too?

If you are retired with a disablity from the Marines I am sure they will let you on base. If you have any question call the Game Warden his number on base is 760 725-3360 I hope this helps and you are allowed to come and join us. Take care

Well, I got out and have service connected disability that qualifies for the disabled vet license. I didn't do my 20, which would be "retiring." Hopefully, it will still count! I'll give the Warden a call. But I am thinking he might direct me to the club, since it is their show.

I have no idea when I'm going back out again. I might just take the family out there on a long walk (with a gun) and see what comes my way.
