There are lots of options for fun fishing. you can surf fish right at the beach your at. Fish as the tide comes in or goes out. Use light tackle as if you were in fresh water.

Newport Beach has two landings (Davy's Locker and Newport Landing) where you can charter a small boat or go out on a cattle boat. Cattle boat is much cheaper and the sand bass are going off. You can also rent a skiff at Davy's locker and fish the harbor for spotted bay bass. They are the small mouth of the ocean and pound for pound are the toughest little bass you will see.

Take a day trip to Catalina. Your family will enjoy and you can rent a small skiff. Troll some Bomber A type lures and you will catch Calico Bass, Barracuda and maybe yellowtail.

Freshwater is a little bit of a drive. You have Irvine lake (right now is catfish season). They have some monsters cats and some decent bass too (bass are catch and release). You can also go the East Fork of the San Gabriel river for trout. Some stocked fish with the occasional small wild rainbow.

What beach spot are you in? I can try and come by and give you some directions if you like.

Thanks bsandls.

I'm back in OR now but your info would of helped me out a lot if my laptop didnt go out on me. I had a blast down there though. We stayed at this beach house on 17th St. and did all my fishing off the pier. Didnt catch much except for perch and croaker. First time catching croakers in my life though. Also saw a few guys catching sting rays.

Sorry I missed you. I havnt fished the pier since I was a kid. Those are good memories.

Caught herring, Tom Cod, etc... What kind of croaker if you know? In the surfline you will catch Corbina (delicious). I have caught yellowfin and seen spotfin croaker caught. All very tasty

Not sure what kind. They have stripes like stripers in a way. But you're right though, they're tasty.

On the way back, I took a peak at Pyramid Lake and will probably make my way there next time.

Pyramid is good, especially for stripers. Right next door is castaic, use to be famous for monster large mouth. A lot of people predicted the world record large mouth would come from the Castaic afterbay. Never did but a few people got really close.
