State to allow hunt for Grizzly Island elk

SAN FRANCISCO – Heard about the elk hunt?

The tule elk population has rebounded so dramatically in Northern California that state officials will again allow hunters to bag one of the imposing creatures.

They'll close Grizzly Island for two months beginning in August so hunters can thin the herd.

The 8,600-acre island 30 miles northeast of San Francisco is home to 150 tule elk, but can only sustain about 100.

"They have a good habitat out there, and they don't have a lot of predators, so they do what elk do," said senior wildlife biologist Terry Palmisano.

The tule elk - found only in California - have come back from the brink of extinction.
