Got this from Western Hunter and the appointment looks promising. Anyone know anything more about this guy?

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on Monday, 1/20/04, the appointment of Loris "Ryan" Broddrick to the position of Director of the Department of Fish and
Game.

"Ryan's extensive background in conservation and resource management makes
him an ideal candidate to lead the Department of Fish and Game," said
Schwarzenegger. "During his long time service, Ryan has proven his ability
to work with many diverse interests in the service of protecting
California's wildlife resources."

Broddrick has worked in the Department of Fish and Game for over 20 years,
beginning in 1981 as a game warden and holding a variety of positions before
being appointed Chief Deputy Director in 1997. He left the department in
2001 to join the Western Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited as the director
of conservation policy. At Ducks Unlimited, Broddrick has been an advocate
for wetlands and waterfowl, forging wildlife habitat partnerships between
landowners, agriculture, and conservation groups.

During his tenure at the Department of Fish and Game, Broddrick also held
the positions of deputy director, regional manager of the Sacramento
Valley-Central Sierra Region, and regional patrol chief in the Office of
Spill Prevention and Response after serving in a number of law enforcement
positions within the department. Prior to joining the department, Broddrick
was an environmental scientist with Raymond Vail Associates from 1979 to
1980, and worked for the California Solid Waste Management Board from 1974
to 1979. He also served as a member of the Bay Delta Advisory Committee
where he chaired subcommittees on ecosystem restoration and working
landscapes.

Hi Guys,

I have been hoping someone else would weigh in on this, so I could gauge the general opinion out there.

But since no one else has, I will tell you what I know.

Ryan is an excellant choice for Director. His experience as set forth in the article speaks for itself. One thing it does not mention is that he also served as the DU rep for the Al Taucher Committee. This is a standing committee of the California Fish and Game Commission, that includes a citizens' advisory subcommittee for the development and implementation of policy aimed at preserving and expanding recreational hunting and fishing opportunities. I am the representative for the sporting dog community, and this is where I first met Ryan.

A couple of the things that have come out of the committee recently are AB 396, the SHARE program to open access to private lands for hunting, fishing and other wildlife related recreation (including dog training) and the amendment of the Commission policy on multiple uses of department lands to support hunting and fishing as appropriate uses, where ever hiking or birdwatching is allowed.

I have also met with him outside of the committee on hunting dog training and trial related issues, and have found him to be both well informed, supportive, and easy to work with.

He was at the top of everyone's short list during the search process (at least in the hunting organizations I polled) . I have been told he was Mike Chrisman's (Secretary of Resources, and former Commission Taucher Committee member) first choice for the job. That bodes well for a good working relationship from the Governor, through the Secretary, to the Director, and on down to the end user - US.

I think we have every reason to be pleased.

Florence
