Who came up with this ban? I can’t even remember the last time I found a bullet in an animal. When is the last time you found a bullet in a gut pile?

This ban should not be for big game hunters.

The press release just came out yesterday, so thanks BPenn for putting this up.

To anyone who doesn't like this ban, I have only one question: "What are you going to do about it?"

Discussion on topic in the Politics and Hot Topics forum. You can also find more on my blogsite, http://www.hog-blog.com

Don't just fuss about it. Do something.

Ban is law now. Will become active with new licenses in July 1, 2008.

No renewal or review.

Am I correct in gathering that hunting upland game birds w/lead ammo is still allowed?

Also, anyone know of a non-lead round that can be purchased over the counter ( I realize that most answers will say to reload but I don't re-load, yet, so I need an over-the-counter round)

Thanks

Barnes TSX bullets are loaded in commercial ammo by some manufacturers. I use them from Federal in my 30-06 and like how they shoot and they seem to perform well. This link shows some of the manufacturers loading them.

This is the lead ban area as proposed. The law states that (to paraphrase) rimfire is outlawed until a nontoxic version is produced. Centerfire nontoxic ammo for big game and predators. Upland birds are not affected. Non game animals (like crows) require nontoxic ammo. Ducks of course are already in the unleaded category.

My understanding of zone A inclusion in the ban is because one of the condor lovers "saw" one behind Ventura. No picture, just his word. I'm sure he's not anti-hunting either.

As of now, there is no ammo in any caliber that meets the state law effective 7-1-08. Sometime this "Spring" the state will certify bullets. Who know what will be certified??????

So it is probably best to wait until you get the okay from the state to sight-in your rifle with ammo that may not meet the state's guidelines.

Everyone agrees that a law is only good if its enforceable. I was talking to a Warden the other day (at BPS) about this. He basically told me that if the lead is not visible then your fine (i.e. polymer tip). I think he is right, I just don't see a Warden cutting up a bullet to see if it has lead. Just my $0.02.

I think Shot is probably right about what will happen. However, if you read post #144 in the lead bullet thread in the political forum you can find a four page notice from DFG.

It states that warden will be able to sieze a cartridge for testing later under controlled conditions. If you have a loaded muzzleloader, they can sieze the firearm for later testing of the bullet in the muzzle.

How long before they just sieze all weapons until the testing is completed????????

CS you hit the nail on the head. This is the ultimate goal and then the DFG will work themselves right out of a job.

No I'm not bitter one bit! This Friggin sucks and is unfounded.

Commen Sense,

I saw that post. I wonder though where they will get the funding to do these tests? And who will do it? I am sure a minimal amount of Wardens will actually seize ammo for testing. Obviously, the best thing to do is follow the law, but not everyone does.

Get a grip you guys. Wardens are not going to seize your weapons, and they are not just going to accept a ballistic tip bullet as ok either. For loaded ammo, they can simply take your personal info/license data, and then have someone at the office use a pair of snips on the bullet -- not that big of a deal if they are inclined to do that. And for me, I would much rather have that scenario that have enforcement rules that could demand that we can only use ammo that is on a certified factory ammo list that is readily identifiable unique color or cartridge stamping -- that would really hurt handloaders. I think the DFG will be quite reasonable in how they enforce this new regulation, that was established with parameters that DFG recommended against to begin with. The DFG is not the enemy here. The bad guys are the legislature and the F&G Commission which took the regulations well beyond what the legislature intended.

I agree that DFG is not the enemy. They were very opposed to a ban on mountain lion hunting, and still want it changed. But if they observe you hunting lions, they will follow the law and arrest you.

It’s not that hard to cut a bullet in half. They all have bolt cutters and can easily use those to clip it. This law is freak’n ridiculous. But the law is the law. I just really want to know if any of these people have seen a deer shot with a 300. There is never a bullet in the gut pile!

Fisherman – You are next! I guarantee no more lead weights coming soon!
