After a 20+ year break from hunting, i am ready to try it again. I will be exclusively attempting to hunt for birds only, roaming the West Delta of California, and further north up I-5 for private lands.
I really want to avoid public hunts and public lands (primarily b/c of wed sat/sun restriction), joining a fancy duck club ($$$), nor am i interested in planted pheasant - which doesnt leave me much left to hunt!
Question: what is the approach for cold-calling a local ranch/farmer for permission? Is it is simple as knocking on the front door and introducing yourself or a little more tact go through local knowledge to get a lead?
Do farmers post online seasonal permission slips to hunt somewhere? I recently found a small farm that permits hunting (quality still unknown) advertised by a small sign on his gate, that i just happened to drive by!
I suspect most farmers will only permit hunting to people through word of mouth, actually prolly safer, and keeps it "in the family". pay your dues.
I suspect the success ratio is akin to selling vacuums door to door, but the possibility of striking in rich!
thanks for reading,
Darren
