Hi all,

New Member to this site. Looks interesting so far. Posting a pic of my 2002 oryx. It's a cow with a 6 1/4" base and a length of 38 1/4" on one side and 38" on the other. Great hunt. This was my 4th year of applying for it. Got it in Rhodes Canyon on WSMR.

Sandman- welcome! I'm pretty new around here as well. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

I'm really interested in your hunt! Did you have a guide or is it something you can do your self? Colorado Bob says his upcomming hunt is a two day affair. Is that enough time or not? I live in Minnesota, if I were to draw a tag, how much time would I need to set aside for scouting an area?

That's a beautiful animal you have there! I really want a Gemsbuck!!! It would look great on my wall. Since the bulls and the cows are very similar in size, did you just shoot the first one you had a chance at, or did you sort through several animals?

Sorry for all the questions, but I think this is a hunt I would like to do some day, and you obviously have some first hand experience.

Again, Welcome!!

Howdy,

Thanks for the welcome, I'm look forward to cruising around the site.

My hunt was a one-day guided cow hunt but it is now my understanding that all of hunts are now two day unguided either sex hunts. Where I was hunting, a two day hunt is plenty of time to get a good animal.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime hunt on the White Sands Missile Range. There is no opportunity to scout the area ahead of time since it is on a military base. I had to be there at 5:30 in the morning, they did vehicle checks and there was a long list of do's and dont's. They send you a list of items that you can and can't take on the base so you are prepared before you get there. They are serious about this list of items, they will send you home if you show up with an unauthorized item.

I took my time in choosing my animal. There were many to choose from but some had broken horns, were too far away or were to small. I killed mine about noon, was off the base at 1:30 and saw approximately 50 animals before this one.

I used a Remington Savage 7mm with 175grain soft point bullets. I was probably about 75 yards away and she was quartering away at a trot. You will need that size gun or bigger. It took two shots to kill her and the bullets did not exit the body. They are tough animals to bring down!

I don't know the exact number of successful hunts on the day of my hunt. The day before there were 29 successful out of 30 hunters.

Am getting a head mount so still waiting to see how it will look on my wall. Am very happy with the animal and with the hunt.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions would be happy to answer them.
