Not necessarily true, some of the population hunts are no different than the once in a lifetime trophy hunts
on White Sands. They do have some broken horn hunts, but the hunt I just went on was a
population reduction hunt on McGregor Range, the license states "any one Oryx"

The Oryx population has grown way beyond what they expected, they are now doing quite a few reduction hunts.
There are the "once in a lifetime" hunts on Rhodes, Small Missle Range, and Stallion. Population reduction hunts include off range hunts on public lands surrounding the Missle Range and McGregor range. Broken Horn hunts are all on the Missle Range. I gotta tell you, the off-range hunts are not bad, the herd has expanded onto a lot of public hunting areas and you have 30 days to hunt.

How do you know if you have to take a broken horn Oryx on a Reduction hunt? Do they tell you when you get there?

The broken horn hunt is a hunt you apply for just like any others, they have specific hunt codes. They told us they would
prefer we target pregnant females, but we could take what ever we liked. They are getting serious about thinning the herd.
I heard the missle range has around 5000 Oryx on it and they would like to get those numbers below 2000. I think they would
put out more permits if the hunt area was not on a military installation that has all sorts of "black projects". They can't watch larger numbers of people. Not to mention the un-exploded ordinance

Here is the link to the proclamation. Oryx hunts are on page 19, 48, 49

Actually there are several good places. The area east of McGregor range has quite a few animals as well as the area between T or C and the White Sands Missle range. Let me know if you draw and I will hook you up with all the info I can
supply.

I know that Rodes Canyon and and the Stallion Range are the two best units to hunt in White Sands Missile Range, but is there a better time to hunt Oryx? The Aug, Oct, Dec or Jan time frames? It's my first time applying, so there's probably not a chance in ..... I will draw.

I'm curious too. Broken horns from fighting in the rut? What month does it start? What is the best time to go to avoid broken horns? I know....I ask too many questions. :) RG

It really doesn't matter which hunt. The only problem is the August hunt. It's hotter than hell!!
