Here are some pictures from last weeks Rhodes Canyon Oryx hunt. We went unguided and had a great time. The missle base really did a good job and the New Mexico wardens that were present were very helpful. Too bad it was once in a lifetime.
I really thought that this time I would draw a tag because I put in for the broken horned oryx for my 2nd and 3rd choices, but I guess so did a lot of other applicants. Nada para mi.
Thanks for the compliment, the rifle is a Mauser 98 in .338 win that I built myself a few years back, I finally got to shoot something with it. I always thought it would be too big for deer.
Mrs sagebrush was drawn for Rhodes Canyon in December. This is the same hunt I drew in 2005. I also drew a depradation tag for 2006 but I haven't been called yet, so it's doubtful they'll get up to 217 this year. I can't wait to go back!
Big Dave, I assume Alamogordo would be your best bet. They have everything there, motels, restraunts, and a Walmart.
I live about an hour away in the mountains so if you need anything get ahold of me.
My 9 year old son drew a depredation hunt (i shot a 35 3/4 bull on same hunt 2 years ago) and his rank is 45 so he has a pretty good chance of hunting next spring as well.
best chance is to stay at Soccoro..its closer! they have everythere, even a walmart...stallion range is a good place to hunt oryx..its fun...i ll be goin with cousins of my in march 2008...
The deadline for the Oryx draw was Feb 3rd and that was for hunts in the end of 2007 and spring of 2008.
Resident tag is $159.00
and the non res tag is $1616.00
This is also one of the best eating game animals there is.
I see them just about every time I drive to CA across the White Sands Missile range.
I was lucky enough to put a real nice bull one on my wall almost 2 years ago. Our hope this year is Zach my 9 yr old has a good ranking on the depredation hunt this year.
I plan on using my Win mod 70 .308 with Nozler Partitions. I'm assuming it's enough rifle. Can't wait for this hunt. It's the only good tag I've drawn this year.
Is there a good butcher in town that can process the meat quickly. Or should I just quarter it and make tracks for Southern CA.
I wonder if CA CWD rules apply on Oryx ??? I didn't see any mention of Oryx or Gemsbuck.
There probably will be butchers at the gate that can help, As far as the .308, you might be a little undergunned (in my opinion... which doesn't mean much) The oryx are pretty damned tough.
