Night anglers are having their day

By Ed Zieralski, SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

June 20, 2003

It's summertime, time to fish at night in San Diego County.

Night fishing for channel catfish is in full swing this weekend at three county lakes, and a night bass tournament is set for San Vicente tomorrow night.

First, the catfish.

Dixon Lake, in Escondido, begins its night fishing program tonight following the plant of 3,000 pounds of channel catfish. The lake will be open Wednesday through Saturday nights for fishing through the summer.

Lake Poway and Lake Jennings also are open for night fishing, with both lakes allowing fishing after dark Fridays and Saturdays. Both will be stocked regularly with channel catfish.

But channel catfish aren't the only fish with nocturnal ways. Largemouth bass also feed by the light of the moon. The second of five El Cajon Ford Night Team Tournaments is tomorrow night. Anglers will try to put together a tournament stringer limit of three bass to earn cash.

Also, from 3:30-6:30 p.m., Skyline Church's Fishing Ministry will hold its annual raffle and barbecue to raise funds for its upcoming kids fishing trips. The raffle will be held at the lower staging area of San Vicente. Paul Leader, owner of El Cajon Ford, is donating proceeds from the barbecue for the church program. News yesterday from the San Diego City Lakes was that concessions at Miramar Lake and Lake Murray will open June 27.

Ted Medina, the city's chief deputy director of community parks, said he wasn't sure Miramar would be open for fishing by then, but concessions will be open there and at Murray seven days a week starting that date.

"There are a lot of citizens at those lakes every day," Medina said. "We hope it works out for us."

Miramar and Murray will have gas and electric motors for rental boats. El Capitan, Hodges, Lower Otay, San Vicente and Sutherland will have gas motors only.

Medina said the plan is to re-open concessions at San Vicente, El Capitan, Lower Otay and Hodges by July 4. He said Sutherland may be delayed because of work that is needed to upgrade its concession building.

All of the former city recreation center directors have been "promoted," Medina said, into concession operator positions. They'll work for Sue Gonzales, reservoir concession manager.
