Nimbus Hatchery Opens Salmon Ladder Nov. 13
Contact: Patrick Foy, Information Officer (916) 358-2938 or Terry West, Hatchery Manager (916) 358-2820.
RANCHO CORDOVA - The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will open the American River fish ladder to salmon at its Nimbus Hatchery on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Department hatcheries staff expect to see more than 1,000 salmon, said Terry West, hatchery manager. Tuesday was chosen to open the ladder because water temperature is now acceptable. The salmon will be evaluated to determine if enough are "ripe" to begin the spawning process. If the fish are determined ready, then spawning activities could begin within days.
This year California's drier-than-normal season has delayed the opening and has shortened the typical window of time for spawning West said. Nimbus Hatchery is located on the American River at Hazel Avenue and Nimbus Road, in Rancho Cordova.
The public is invited for free viewing from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., from the visitor center.
