I bet the folks posting that they dont like Nonresidents getting "1" Elk tag in California (which probably isn't even 10% of the tags), would be angry as hell if Colorado imposed a 10% cap on Nonresident Elk Tags which would still equal out to about 10,000 tags.[/b]
In 2004, there were 42 MATURE Bull "Tule" elk tags. This is NOT COUNTING the Roosevelt and Rock Mt. tags.
These are 2004 stats and new hunts have been added since then.

We give out 10% of our Sheep, Goat & Mosse Tags. I bet you have more Tule Elk than we have of Sheep, Goat & Moose.

And when you add in your Rocky Mtn, Roosevelt & Tule Elk, CA is being way too conservative IMO.

But that is their right which I support. Just like I support drastically reducing the number of Nonresidents here.

If CA gives out a maximum of 10 percent of the bull tags(I doubt any non-resident would be interested in a cow for that price) than that would be fair and that is what most western states offer.
For Bull tule elk, (which is what most non-residents would be after) that would be roughly 4 or 5 bull tags. And that's better than the 1 and only bighorn tag that is allowed for the non-res'

Many non-res hunters hunt the western Cow hunts.

With Arizona going to $700+ on Elk tags that $1050 Cali tag fee is not out of line.

It's good to see you Cali guys not bashing the non-res deal. Kansas was in the same boat several years ago when it finally allowed nonresidents in to hunt deer. A lot of locals including me didn't agree with it then. But we found out they did it to maintain relationships with other states on game laws and prosicutions.
And many still don't like it, because it was also the beginning of large scale leases, and big guide services like George Taulman's USO. They started to pay to hunt the same land that we all once hunted for free from our neighbors. Farmers looking to suppliment their income quickly started leasing land to the highest leasee.
I guess there's always someone who can afford those Cali tags. I'm sure there are some fine hunting spots, but your everyday guy like me probly won't be the ones buying the permits. Good luck on it all.

The big difference is that Calif. will be giving bonus package deals with the tags which include tickets to 6 Flags, Knotts Berry Farm & Raging Waters for a mere extra $500.00.
<
And for an additional $750.00 you can actually left the state with the animal.
<
, barring a legal investigation of the type & experience of using your weapon of choice. Which may be a sling shot, after all you entering Calif. from another state.

I don't like it, but fairs fair, right?
I have put in for elk tags in CA as a lifelong resident and never been drawn. I have been drawn numerous times out of state. Thank you to all out of state Fish and Game, I just hope it cost those coming here what it has cost me out of state, no less...

As far as I know, non-residents have been hunting CA elk through the PLM program. I've seen Will Primo took a tule bull on one of the "The Truth" video. They were just not in the drawing with residents. I guess they are now.

PLM tags are from about $12,000 low to $20,000 (at Tejon) and maybe more on othere ranches.

This gives us a chance at a public (or other private) land hunt.

The chance of drawing will be remote and Ca will make money charging for that chance.

I agree that it is fair. But it really doesn't mean a whole lot because if you don't have max points, the odds of drawing a Ca Tule elk tag will be higher than drawing a sheep tag. Non residents will get screwed. They will have to buy a non resident licence every year, for a chance in hell. I believe that Ca did this to stay out of a future legal battle.

Muskeg, the elk on Tejon are American elk that escaped from a high fenced ranch years ago.

I buy a license when I come down for my pig hunts.

It will be nice to be able to put in for an Antelope.

Fair and a good thing. Can't wait to read Carter's H.S. take on this.

You don't need maximum points to draw.
Last year was the first time ever that I missed the deadline. I was so mad at myself.
It didn't hurt me none. I drew a tule tag this year with less than maximum points.

Maybe many of you don't remember when moonbeam brown was governor, he authorized giving a private rancher in the Tehachapis excess Tule Elk from state lands then if one wanted to hunt the ranch owner charged a very high fee.

The luck of the draw. I have had good luck with the AZ draw. I have drawn 4 out of 5 times I have put in. I can't seem to build any points up !!!!!

Glasseye, I understand that you do have a chance without max points, but it is a very slim chance. Don't get me wrong, I still apply every year. Try and figure out the odds that you were up against in drawing your tag. At least 100 to 1 (less than 1%). Those are terrible odds especially if you (N/R) have to buy a $100+ N/R license.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
The bill would limit the number of tags issued
annually to nonresidents to one antelope tag and one elk tag.[/b]

This sentence right here shoots the odds through the roof for N/R's. It's a chance in hell (for a N/R), if you ask me. I'm still for it because I apply all over the west and believe everyone should have some type of opportunity even if it is small. My

I believe in playing the game even when the odds are stacked against you.
That's why I now will have 10 bonus points for deer in AZ going into next years draw.
I have applied faithfully every year for the strip ever since they began giving bonus points for deer.
Every year I buy an AZ license even if I don't hunt there every year. I pay my dues and one day it will pay off.
They only give out about 65 tags for 13B and only 10 percent can go to a NON-Res, but not guaranteed 10 percent. Also there is always around 6,000 + applicants for that hunt.
I really thought that this year I would draw it, but never dreamed I would get the tule tag instead.
Maybe next year I draw the strip!

GE, now that would be awesome. A bomber CA tule and a smoker Strip buck in consecutive years. Good luck.
