The Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) will host a hearing on Tuesday, April 1, in Eureka on the proposed 2003 ocean salmon fishery management options. The meeting begins at 7 p.m., in the Red Lion-Eureka's Evergreen Room, 1929 Fourth St., Eureka.

There will be members from the PFMC, the California Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to accept comments on the options presented by the PFMC regarding the management plan for the ocean salmon fishery. People can make comments in person or through written material. The PFMC will present the options at the hearing, and make them available through the PFMC's website at www.pcouncil.org.

Every year PFMC follows a pre-season process to develop recommendations for management of the ocean salmon fisheries off the coast of California, Oregon and Washington. Public involvement began in late February when the PFMC released its reports describing the previous season and afforded estimates of salmon abundance for the coming season. A PFMC meeting held in March to propose season options followed the reports.

The PFMC will select the preferred option during its April 7 through April 11 meeting in Vancouver, WA. The NMFS will implement the recommendations on May 1.

To maintain consistency in governing the salmon fishery, the Fish and Game Commission traditionally has adopted regulations that conform to the federal decision.
