Brent, thanks for directing me to the post. You were damn lucky. There must have been crap going everywhere when that gun blew.

The good news is you get to buy a new rifle now!!

My reload story.

about 15 years ago i bought my first new rifle a browning A bolt .270. I was hunting with a freinds reloads (a very responsible and meticulous guy).

Well we stalked within about 80 yards of a real nice buck in Paso Robles. I pulled the trigger and just got a "whiff" my brother was with me and i jacked another shell into gun and went to shoot again. My brother had to wrestle the gun out of my hands as i was gonna take another shot as the buck was still within range. I remember getting pissed at him as he (my brother John) is always paranoid about stuff and overly cautious.
I did go back and borrow a rifle and i wacked that buck.

Well we never did get that bullet out of the barrell. 2 gunsmiths later i finally sent it back to browning and got another rifle. My brother saved me from at a minimum something like Brent got and possibly something worse.

Brent, i aint saying it was the reloads, but, that is one of the reasons that i wont shoot reloads.

Thank God you are ok, Literally, you dodged a bullet and figuratively I did as well about 15 years ago. We may have both burned up our luck.

Lets both shoot box ammo from now on. It kills em just as good.

By the way, in a couple of weeks i am getting a new rifle from HSprecision, (as you are now in the market for a new rifle) I will let you know how i like it.

Yep, seems to be a popular opinion that I'm one lucky guy. Not as lucky as that hog though. I know where he lives. I'll get him next year.

I'm wonderin' how bad I'll be flinchin'. We'll see. I need to get out there asap and start shooting. I like Federal Premiums. Which factory loasd do you all prefer?

What's the story with your exploder? Is it trashed? What are you going to replace it with?

It's beyond repair. I'm hoping Weatherby will send me a new rifle. If not, I'll be shopping for a magnum. I've got two 30-06's, and a .270. Maybe a 300, or another 7mag.

Before you consider a Sako, check out the recall of Sako due to barrel explosion/disintegration with factory ammo in the Medium Bore Rifle forum posted by Bzzboyz on Jan. 18, 2005 it is titled "speaking of Sako....". If you want to do a search, type "Sako barrel explosion" on the JHO in-house search function & click "medium bore" on the selection & click the Most Recent window & it will come up on the 4rth page. The barrels explode & disintegrate like a banana peel destroying the receiver & stock & causing shooter injury both in the U.S. & in Finland where the Sakos are manufactured. Close to 3,000 of these Sako rifles were recalled & according to the article Sako has been able to track down 90% of the rifleowners for recall notification. The other 10%....who knows where these Sako rifles are????? Read the posts on probable cause of these Sako barrel explosion/disintegration. 'Nuff said. God Bless.

Brent - That's tough luck. I was expecting a slightly different outcome from this post... I WAS expecting blood and good pics (as 95% of your posts contain)... but not like this!

I'm really glad I read this post... After having shot 1000's of rounds from firearms with nary a problem (I'm including .22's), sometimes we don't think about the actual risks to the shooter involved with our chosen sport. Broken bowstrings and exploding limbs take out people's eyes also. I'll certainly be more careful in the future!

That said, here's the reel meet: This could have happened for any number of reasons already stated. But there's one other reason that hasn't been considered. Sabotage. I think Buckeye planned this entire event to cash in that secret life insurance policy he took out on you. I'd have your gun checked for finger prints... 10 bucks says his are on there somewhere! Gents... Get a Rope! LOL

But for real, after thorough documentation by your own gunsmith, I'd pay for shipping and include the receipt for what you paid in the box - If it was defective, I imagine they'll reimburse you. I would bet however they'll pull the "ReLoads = No Warranty." But Brent even if they eat 1/2 the cost of a new 7mm it's worth it. Then sell it / trade it and buy whatever you want. Then again - it'd be cool to hang on to that gun also - A great coffee table piece...

BTW - love my Wby 300 Win Mag... but I did just toss out the hot loads I had for it... Hell, 300wm is fast enough... back to Out Of The Box Federals! Just glad you're still shootin!

this thread is really throwing me off track on the idea of reloading... i am ready to buy a press but before i touch it, i think i need an actual hands-on class besides the reading only!!!

Glad you're okay Brent. Your story points one why people should wear ballistic eyewear when shooting.

I'm a lefty who shoots a righty rifle. That puts my face right next to the chamber where most blow out when there is a problem. Never had a misfire myself, knock on wood. Put a pair of $100 Oakleys or Wileys on and keep your eyeballs in good shape.

As far as using someone else's reloads, not me. Seen too many misfires and bad loads that went bang from a bad load.

QEU - I was thinking the same thing. I couple of weeks ago I had my reloading equipment picked out and I never bought any of it after reading these posts. I am still saving my brass but whether I decide to give reloading a try is still up in the air. Going to stick to factory for now.

Q: Why does always seem to be Weatherby's that blow up? One Tracks, my neighbor lost an eye to exploding Weatherby and his dad bought one new that every round (factory rounds) that he extracted had a split case. Taking a glance at Gregs picture I'm pretty sure that's a Weatherby too.

I don't think I'll be buying a Weatherby!

Guys don't be affraid of reloading just pay attention to what your doing.

I haven't sent the rifle to Weatherby yet. I am still showing it off to friends. I enjoy seeing their reactions. So, I don't have any answers. The bolt is jammed, so I haven't extracted the casing. Still a mystery.

Jesse: Yah, eye protection is a great idea. Imagine that. I might be one of those guys wearin' the yellow shootin' glasses, lookin' like a kook. I guess that's better than being good 'ole One Eye.

Go to an optometrist and get some poly-carb safety lenses installed in your favorite sunglasses. You can also get anti-reflective coating and polarizing put on 'em.

It ain't cheap, but neither are your eyeballs.

Just stumbled on this thread, made me have flashbacks when I had an injury to my left eye a few months back. Mine was from a ricochet from a .22. The optomologist was considering emergency cornea surg. Yikes!, luckily it has since healed and I have correctable 20/20 vision. I completely agree with Jesse, get some shooting/ballistic type of eyewear!

My good buddy blew up his .45 cal. pistol with his reload and he has been reloading thousands of rounds for years. His face was sprayed with sharpnel, luckily he was wearing safety glasses & there was no eye injury.
Reloads!!!!! Very responsible, meticulous people are just human and like us ordinary folks can commit missteps, get called on the phone & come back & forget a crucial step in the reloading process or simply get complacent & make errors or have a streak of UN-wastefulness & use 20 yr. old primers/powders that are unreliable due to age. All of that will not be known to the recipient until the misfire/detonation. It is a safe rule not to use other people's reloads, no matter how reliable or meticulous. Roll your own or factory ammo only. Other people are very insistent that you try their reloads on their gun or your gun. Don't!!!!!! Be safe. Keep your powder dry!!!! God Bless.
