Hi Guys and Gals,

What is your opinions are about different brands of scopes and magnification that is moderately priced. I was leaning towards $200.00 - $300.00 range or is it too low for a budget?

Currently, I have a savage 110 series in 30-06 caliber with a scope that came with the package I believe its a Simmons 3-9x 40 mm. I was going to upgrade my scope with a better one since last weekend I took it to Laguna Mountains I could not see much and it was getting fogged up. So, I was just wondering what kind of setup do you guys have that is moderately priced and gets the job done.

FYI, I intend to do hunt wild pigs, deer and hopefully someday bigger game i.e. elk moose etc.

Thanks to all of you for help & Happy Hunting !!!!!!!!!:wavin hello:

If you dont want to go above $300... I would look into the VXI 3-9x40 by leupold. The VXII 3-9x40 would be my first recommendation but after the scope, rings/bases, and taxes I paid $404.00 for the one I just purchased for my GF's .243.

Bushnells new "elite" line of scopes are supposed to be good but I have no experience with them.

I have two of the Bushnell Elite series, the 3200 and the 6500. I don't recall the price of the 3200 because I've had it a while, but the 6500 is out of that price range. I love both of those scopes, though! The 6500 just has a higher magnification (2.5-16x50). IMHO, you can't go wrong with the Elite series.

Check the Bushnell Elite 3200. I have one and I like it a lot. I would say very close to the Leupold. I have a VXII 3-9-40 and dont see much difference.

I think it is in that price range.

Nikon pro staff scopes are in the price range you mentioned. The 3x9 40mm is about $150 and the 3x9 50mm is about $200. They are good optics, nitrogen filled (no fogging) and have good reticules and a good reputation a decent warranty.

If you need more light gathering (early morning/evening for hogs) I'd go with the 50mm. Depending on the contour of your barrel, you may need to go to medium height rings in order for the front objective to clear the barrel.

I take 100-200 yard shots and rarely go over 6x, so these 2 scopes work for me.

You can't go wrong with a Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm or a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42mm. The Leupold should be in your price range but the Nikon Monarch might be in the $400 range. Leopold & Nikon are like Sony and Samsung of T.V. and electronics. If I were you, I would buy the brand that are known for overall quality.

Another vote for the Leupold scopes. I have a VX-I in 2-7 x 33mm - works like a charm. I only hunt hogs, and have never had to shoot out past 130 yards. If you plan to hunt at ranges much longer than that then I'd go with the 3-9 x 40mm.

I HUNT WITH THE VXII 3-9X40 I LOVE IT IF YOU CAN SPEND THE MONEY THIS IS THE FIRST CHOICE. TRY LOOKING AT THE NITREX TOO, CHEAP AND SUPPOSED TO BE REALLY NICE. MULTY COATED

I just bought a Nikon Prostaff from Ebay 3-9x40 with the BDC reticle. I think is was about $130 with free shipping. I have the same scope on my other rifle and have never had a problem with it(no fogging, etc). My 2 cents.

The Nikon Buckmasters series is a nice way to go. I was in the same situation as you with the 200-300$ budget after hunting with the simmions scope that came with the package i had to switch it out. For me the NIKON Buckmasters 3-9x40 with the BDC was a great buy at 219$ before tax. never had a problem with it

Nikon, Bushnell Elite, and Leupold VX-I would all be in your price range and are good, base-level scopes. 3-9 variable is about as much as you'll ever need for big game hunting, and I wouldn't mess with an objective larger than 40mm. The trade-off in profile and weight aren't worth the tiny bit of light gathering benefit you'll get during legal shooting hours.

Oh, and I was able to get two VX-IIs from EBay, in good shape, for around $200 each.

First of all, thanks for your opinions !!!

what is the difference between Bushnell Elite 3200 series and 4200 series?? also same thing with Leupold VX-II and VX III ? other than the price ?

Leupold's tend to be a bit more expensive than the Bushnell's.

I'm a totally novice hunter, so other than the scope what else do I need to buy and where to buy them from? The descriptions says scope, warranty card and registration paper. Is that all I need? I don't get the rings and mounts part? any help with those ?:confused-yellow::confused-yellow::confused-yellow:

You can use the one you have on your savage. just be sure the one you are going to buy is also a 1"tube and no more than 40mm objective.

For the dollar range you are talking in your budget, I would go for the Burris Fullfield II, Nikon Buck Master, or Leupold VXII Scopes in 3-9x40. All of them offer some sort of bullet drop compensating reticles. They are very good and durable choices for the money. Shock proof , anti fog, and water proof. The burris usually comes with a set of binoculars or a gps unit as a promotional item. I have all three of these scopes on different rifles of mine, and all are good. If I had to pick my favorite it would be the Nikon, and the Burris a very close second. All are good, and I would never feel underscoped with any of them.

I have a Simmons Pro-hunter that has served me well over the years, but it does not have near the light gathering capabilities. Stay away from the low end Bushnells you will be disapointed with these. Look at Midway USA on line. They have all of the scopes I mentioned for a reasonable price. Don't forget your local Sportsmen's Warehouse (if they have not closed near you), or Cabelas, Bass Pro-shops etc... They will have good deals as well.

I have the same gun only a .270 and I put a Nikon prostaff 3-9x40mm on with no regrets. Looked at both the Nikon and the Leupold. I liked the Nikon a little better. Seemed to be brighter than the Leupold, but maybe it was the fact that I was able to get a soft case with the extra cash. Good luck.

second that

And a third from me. I have all three as well and they are all fine scopes. The only thing I would differ in is the ranking: Burris first, Nikon second and Leupold third.

I would probably even go a step further and say that the Burris Fullfield II is on par with or even better than Leupold's VX III and Nikon's Monarch scopes.
