Looking at applying for the Oryx hunts this year and wondered what units are best? Also is it better to hunt in the Fall or Winter. Is there a way to tell which oryx is a bull vs a cow? Thanks

I'm assuming you are applying for NM. I think anyone on the White Sands Missile Range would be good. I got mine on the Stallion Range. It was my 2nd or 3rd choice. It was on 1/31 & 2/1. You are playing the weather game then. I think an earlier one would be better plus the animals have not been hunted. They were a little spooky on my hunt.

As far as M/F. They look the same. females have horns that are a little thinner than a bull. But they still can go to 40". Bulls horns are usually a little shorter but they are heavier.

I think any oryx with horns over 36" is a trophy off the White Sands.

A lot of the oryx (bulls) have broken horns.

The meat is excellant !! Good Luck.

Applications are due pretty soon I think.

I would NOT apply for any of the depravation hunts. You get on a list & when the animals are on the guy's range you'll get a call & have to be there in a day or two.

Stick with the hunts on the Missile Range. I applied with the hunts that had the greatest number of tags-----more chances of drawing.
