owens river

I might go up in a few weeks to fish the lower owens river. Hows  the bite????

My friend caught an 18" stocker out of the owens river this past weekend and it was tagged by the DFG. Neither of us have ever done this before, what's the reason they tag them.

The way that I understand it is.....About 3 yrs ago DFG got tired of fishermen and the resort owners/sporting goods people, calling any healthy 14"+ fish with all of their fins "Alpers Trout"  They believed that the private hatchery was getting all of the credit for the oversized Rainbows found in the E. Sierras.  Now, they apply tags to some (I believe it is a small amount) of their bigger stockers.  No, you can't redeem them for a new Corvette or get a free bottle of Power-bait.  They're just there to tell you that they raise quality fish also.....hronk

I caught a 20" rainbow at Intake II last year that had the DFG tag. That was the explanation I got too.             Scott

They look pretty cool clipped threw your fly vest flap, kinda like duck bands on your duck call lanyard.
