The north state’s most pristine river canyon — the McCloud River and its epic wild trout — was spared when fire crews staved off a 46,000-acre wildfire and thwarted it from devouring this paradise. On the river last week, muted flames and smoke from smoldering stumps showed how close this canyon and watershed came to devastation. Firefighter Ken Maples led a crew along the river to put out several spot fires. Meanwhile, Incident Commander John Wood of the Forest Service contemplated when to reopen the access road, campground and canyon to the public.
