So the wife gave me a pass to go hunting up there in February while she gets the spa treatment that day. I have one day to get it done. Who do you guys recommend. Archery or rifle it doesn't matter.

Below are 5 good guides. They all hunt in the area N -NE of Paso which is generally Parkfield to San Ardo with San Miguel in the middle. Prices are all around 600 last time I checked (575 -650) last time I checked and generally are listed as 2 day hunt although have never heard of Tom W or Frank Hook taking 2 days for 1 animal and I suspect it is the same for the others. Frank has gotten some good national publicity in the last year so you may find him harder to schedule. PM or email me as if you want more details about these operations.

I would just make it clear your intension is to hunt. So i would do archery. most of the guide have access to some awsome private land, that you will get to see at about 100 mph while you chase down a pig, the jump out and shot at it. I myself have found it very unfulfilling! I have used 2 of the above mentioned guides with similiar results. Still great guys and fun but was far from challanging. I wish there was a way just to buy access to the land and then be left alone..

Re Archery & Guides: My discussions with the guides about archery is that "there are too many wounded animals". While most advertise that you will get a good shot opportunity, if fact I know several on the list will keep hunting till you get an animal (or you are such a poor shot you run out of ammo or they “give up”). That said, they are loathe to take archery hunters as they generally don’t want to "call it" after a wounded animal(s) gets away. So if you want to do archery, be sure to check with the guide as to whether they do that and what are the "rules".

What you want motor-vator would be to join one of the hunting lease programs or try semi-guided hunts. I know that Cottonwood hunting (below) has semi-guided hunts it looks good so that I'm going to try that after the first of the year. I don't know any other good semi-guided ones but I'd love to learn from others. I'm aware of Bryon resort as semi-guided but I'm not enthusiastic about it given much of what has been posted here in the last several years.
