So I am new to pigs and have had no mentoring. It's all been self taught through reading and getting out there. i have yet to connect with one, but I am close on tracks. I found a spot with tracks, scat, and rooting. I'm sure of all that, but I am looking for more info on what their bedding areas look like. I am not sure if this is deer bedding? It's in an area that I am confident the hogs are at. I could not find specific discerns or track around it, or any hair in the bedding/on trees surrounding it to give me the definitive clue.

Can you guys post some pics of some hog bedding zones ?

I am excited as hell being a self taught hunter working myself this hot on them, all in public land. I've met a buddy who has no experience on it either, through jesses, so that's good to share the learning curve. Time in the glassing positions and hopefully we can connect. I've attached the bedding found and some rooting. But is that hog bedding?? Any tips on how to tell besides hair and track marks?

Thanks guys

It's hard to tell from the pic. Typically bedding areas are going to be in thick cover and that looks open. They will bed in open areas rarely. It looks as though it is well worn so you hould be able to find tracks to or from. You are on the right track so keep at it.

Doesn't look like pig. When they bed in more open areas they like to do so right up on the trees. But your on the right track. Good luck

It was open and that was my exact concern. It was at the base of the tree in the grass, but not sheltered feeling. I am expecting them to bed in the thicker nearby chaparral, but those were obvious beddings of something. I was thinking deer maybe.

Anyone have pics of pig bedding future reference?

Pig will get right to the base of a tree. Bottom of bed will be rounded, belly like and mounded on the side away from the tree, in most cases. Scat will often be near the bed.
Also check nearby tree trunks for rubbing. Pigs like rocks...in between rocks or as far under as they can get. Security! Its hard to tell from the picture, if its a bed...its a new one. I wouldn't scent up the area but sit on it and keep watch. Hope that helps.

Looks more like typical cattle bedding and open slope foraging, should be easy to determine by droppings and tracks.

May be time to put out the old trail cams............Don

Hogs will find the nastiest piece of real estate around; preferably near a water source. They also very much favor North facing slopes. Find all three and you've got a spot they use. Be aware that IMO hogs don't use the same bedding area all the time unless they're sows with piglets and there's no pressure on 'em. Big boar hogs move around and only hang around an area to "get some".

Stay out of any bedding area and post-up DOWNWIND! I'm amazed at how many hunters commit such a rookie mistake as not paying attention to wind direction.

The best sign for finding pigs is LADIES NIGHT.

I can definitely tell pigs are in the area from the hoof prints, scat, and rooting - that's for sure.

Does anyone have pics of any bedding sites they can positively ID as hogs? Like I said, I couldn't find any hair around these two spots, or on the tree that is casting the shadow in the first pic(there was actually another tree right behind the tree in the pics, and the bedding was butted up near it.) I am feeling like they are either deer or hog, more leaning towards my target species of hog due to all the other relevant sign in the area.

I do feel like they are moving around between multiple beds in the area because some of the pressure and thicker cover that the tracks head into. I definitely expect a sow and some piglets to be in the area based off the tracks. The bed is on a northeast facing slope, so good call on that myfriendis410.

I will also have to keep wind in consideration and a game cam is definitely on my list to buy soon.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Ok...the rooting u got is pigs...the bedding doesnt match a pig bed cuz they often dig it deeper and it ll look lik a nest unless it was a quick lay down.... but a real pig bed is often dugged into the dirt... it ll look lik a army trench in very thick brush....now how would i kno tha???...cuz i ve crawled into several nest or bedding before which i dont recommend u doing tha...lol...

Good luck
