I popped my boar just down the road fron camp - I literally blasted it out of an evil smelling wallow. Since it was close to the road and camp, I decided to haul it back to wash it off before gutting it.

On Hronk's scale it came in at 160lbs live (actually dead) weight., minus quite alot of blood.
<

Field dressed (gutted), it hung at 120lbs.

On the hook at the butcher (no skin, head, feet) - 80lbs.

I have always figgered 1/3 reductions, this shows 1/4. Different scales probably influenced the results, and also take into account that his pig had the fattest guts of any I've ever seen - stomach packed with acorns and intestines stuffed full of grass.

I've always heard that wild pigs in CA will dress out minus head, guts, skin and hooves to a little over 50% of weight on the hoof. Big heavy heads, lots of intestines and very thick skin are the reason. I've shot six pigs and all six have dressed out to just above 50% of on-the-hoof weight, even a 210 pound sow.

Congratulations on the pig.

A good example of how not to eat! His gut was so full of greens/acorns he must of know it was too be his last supper...... Gut pile wt. too hard to guess after seeing that.

That pig had just had dinner & desert, and was in for a quick mud bath before bed. But Rancho had other thoughts.

As another reference point, mine was 116# on the scale (dressed) and 65# at the butcher ready to roll. Seeing as mine was only 4 pounds off yours (gutted) it was strange to be 15 pounds lighter at the butcher. She had a ton of fat that I carved off to that might account for it though. I always figured it was a little over 40% hanging at the butcher from the live weight.

Rancho, check your post, your math should read one half, not one quarter.... I belive the 50% rule, it's held true here

Two 1/4 reductions = 1/2

1/4 of 160 is 40. So 160 live less 40 field dressed = 120. Less another 40 at the butcher = 80. 160 - 80 = 80 which is 1/2 of the original 160 but you only arrived there after two reductions. If the two reductions total 1/2, then half of 1/2 is 1/4.

Rancho - Thanks for the calculations.

Using your numbers for base, mine in last week's POR would have been 240 lbs dead weight fully dressed and ready to party. Very decent indeed! And I would have no need to exagerate. Blood alcohol level and painkiller notwithstanding.
