I'm forming a notion that pigs much prefer stagnant water (ponds..etc) to flowing stream. Now that the rains are about over and everything is drying out I've been trying to stay near water. But it seems that while I've seen many a pig track crosss a stream on ever stay along side one for awhile, they don't seem to dwell there. as opposed to wallows, ponds...etc where they do seem to dwell. I guess if that is the case, I should concentrate on the stagnant ponds instead of hiking creeks.

I would also imaging that most of the pigs have now migrated to private lands with their plentiful artificial cattle ponds.....

what do you guys think?

Pigs have a stomach and legs and they use both. So, for my money, as it warms up I concentrate more on North facing slopes of brush for bedding areas rather than stagnant ponds. It has been our experience that there is a LOT more water around than we are aware of and covering all possible locations is futile.

Hogs are better swimmers than a lot of folks give them credit for, and will think nothing of crossing a body of water...moving or not. My friends' dogs chased a hog around a stock tank for quite a while before they could finally catch up with it. I once caught a young +/-50 pound pig alongside a river bank, and when I leashed up the dogs, it swam across without hesitation despite the nasty current.

At this time of year, I would definitely hunt the north-facing slopes, looking for springs, catch basins, and permanent wallows. But as the hills dry up, and the days and nights heat up, I would focus on the permanent or drought-resistance sources of water. I have traditionally relied upon walking my dogs along creeks or around stock tanks to start a hog race.
