I just moved to CA from TX. (small shock factor regarding hunting)!!! I am curious to find out if there is any prairie dog hunting in CA, or for that matter if anyone could help me with some public (or private) hunting ideas in the Santa Barbara area for big game, etc.

Thanks,
Coby

I think the lack of reply comes from the general nature of the question and the fact that to most native Californians, a Prairie Dog would be a homely girl from fly over country, or a coyote.

There are no dogs to hunt here in Southern California. I'm going to head to my uncle's ranch in NE Wyoming for my prairie dog fix this summer. Trade in your hope for Prairie dogs for a new pest to hunt. Coyotes or how about hogs. Out here the only thing comparable would be ground squirrels.

Hunting in your/our area can be challenging to find accessible public land but it can be done. Additionally, there is a lot of Poison oak in the hills so much so that my hunting buddy refuses to consider hunting most of A zone. Consider Camp Roberts for hogs. Or the Carrizo Plains national monument for rabbits, birds, etc.

Check out the Hog, Deer, and the Varmint forums for more specific info. The guys here are filled with info and very helpful. Look at the guide reviews to get some ideas try the Paso Robles area for hog.

Welcome to Kalifornia,

You should look up all the news articles about ground squirrels around here. They have taken over and the animal rights people are doing all they can to save them. Pretty much anywhere you can hunt in SD county has a ground squirrel problem. At least thats what I have seen. I am lucky enough to be able to hunt Camp Pendleton. And there is no shortage of them here. I don't know what its like further north though. Im not from around here.
