Proof of hogs in Santa Ana River?

This is just my personal opinion.....but if the area DOES NOT allow hunting and a person is killing animals(hogs, rabbits, or what ever is in season) then it could be viewed by law enforcement as "cruelty to animals" and in a lot of jurisdictions, "cruelty to animals" is a felony. Any person hunting in populated/semi-populated areas that disallow hunting should consider this angle that the antis(many district attorney staffs are antis) can use to elevate the situation to a felony. Hope none of us get to be the test case.

Im JUST as interested in actually finding/photographing hogs in the basin as much as i would LIKE to hunt them.
It is a shame however that it isnt allowed.
Just in the few hours scouting around down there the other day, there is ALOT of people on horse, and it is VERY narrow in some areas.

Ive never hog hunted before, i really would like to oneday soon, i think that if i was able to find hogs down there and study them for a bit, that that would greatly improve my chances later on.

Im a young guy just picking up the sport of hunting(or trying), looking to learn.

Hogs run the Santa Ana riverbed all the way from Yorba Linda up past Redlands, clear out to San Timeteo Canyon to Beaumont. Most cities have a projectile ordinance that will get you cited along with a trespass citation.

Lot of hassle unless you are a landowner or have a depredation permit.

I still want to know who the archery Rambo was the coppers were after at Hidden Valley a couple years back. :bag-on-head: PM if you must, I swear I won't tell a soul. :hog chewing:

I also live at one of the river bottom openings and just last week saw 2 duck hunters get tickets and their guns taken from them by the Sheriff's Dept. Like Doug said in an earlier post, the area is in horse town USA and the horseback riders dominate the river bottom and do a lot of work to keep the trails maintained. They patrol and police the area, trust me the cops did not just happen on the duck hunters. Nothing happens down there without someone knowing about it.

I was in the Inland Empire chapter of the NWTF a number of years back and one of the members worked for a pest control company. The story I heard is that someone was farming pigs illegally in the riverbed and when he got popped, he let the pigs loose. At any rate, there was a push to get the DFG to open it up to hunting to eliminate the pigs because they were doing so much damage to the native vegetation. The government decided to hire exterminators to eliminate the pigs. This NWTF member said his company got one of the contracts and that he himself shot several pigs. He hunted mostly at night and on the property of landowners who were complaining about pig damage. This was in the Riverside area.

I dont live to far from the river and my dad worked by the river. His shift was from 7am to 7pm. so he passed by the vanburen river very early and late in the day. He would always tell me about the pigs that would cross and get hit by the cars. Although I never got to see the pigs, he would always tell me about it.
I also knew someone in norco with horses and he told me that one of his friends took a gun out to the river to shoot it. BAD idea! He took longer to walk to the river, load the gun and shoot just one clip out of it, than the cops to get to him.

I have been circled low and checked out by a Highway Patrol helo, and also by an L.A. County Sherriff's helo and also have been patted down by a Highway Patrolman.......all while hunting in a legal to hunt area in the desert. Luckily, it all ended up as "no harm, no foul". So it is much more on a jurisdiction with "NO-HUNTING/NO DISCHARGE OF PROJECTILE WEAPONS" (this includes archery) and with dense housing ringing around the Santa Ana River drainage. If they find a hog carcass with an arrow or a bullet hole..........they will look at you as a suspect. Leave those hogs alone.......not worth the trouble.

About 10+ years ago, we used to hunt hogs out of San Timeteo Canyon. Guys used to catch the escapees out of Big Horn Canyon Ranch. The field was open back then and the owner allowed hunting. It got so bad, DFG started to put up pig traps and then things slowed down. Since, then the field has changed owners and its all landlocked now. I think the city of Riverside owns it now. Back in the day, it used to be an awesome place to hunt.

There are hogs in the Santa Ana River drainage, yes there is..............it is the temptation of going after them hogs that poses a problem. Use a camera............and there should be no problem.

well about 5 years ago I had an idea to try what you did. the county owns the land now. IIRC its the norton younglove preserve.

There ARE hogs in every part of the Santa Ana River bed starting from about Redlands area. There is NO legal part to hunt....i have exhausted all means. best bet is to find a land owner in a county area who gets hogs on their property and hunt them with a bow. in san bernardino county area u need to be about 150yrds away from any structure to discharge a bow.....i shoot my bow on my property in the city and havent had a problem. before it turned into a problem, everyone hunted the riverbottom and shot pigs, yotes, bobcats, and deer. good luck, dont get arrested.ig-laughing:

I used to too until the city passed a no projectile ordinance. Most cities have this ordinance now and you can be cited for just practicing in your back yard. Been there almost done that.

About 17+ years ago, I was parked 3 miles away from the freeway in the Halloran Springs area about 7 miles north of Baker on Freeway 15. I was hunting coyotes and I was target shooting my Mini-14 before I went out and hiked the hills. Suddenly, this CHP helo started circling really low and in about 10 minutes a CHP patrol car came out into my spot. The CHP helo was circling all the time as a back-up for the ground unit. I put my rifle on the ground and walked towards the CHP car BEFORE it came to my spot so as to put as much distance between my Mini-14 and myself so as not to alarm the CHP patrolman. Well of course he ordered me to turn around and put my hands on my head and proceeded to pat me down for concealed weapons. I was clean and so he asked what I was doing and I told him I was coyote hunting and target shooting also. I showed him my hunting license and coyoted mouth calls. He asked if he could search my car and I said yes. He checked my pistols and shotguns in the trunk and they were all empty so we engaged in a very short conversation afterward. He said that they were checking me out because people dump dead bodies in the desert. That was that and he left...........oh! the helo left right after he radioed that the weapons in the car were all empty.
The L.A. County Sherrif's helo happened somewhere in the Leona Valley area east of Palmdale around 18 years ago while dove hunting and it circled us very low for about 5 minutes without calling in any ground unit and then it left and that was that.
Just make sure you are in a legal to hunt County area and your weapons are County ordinance legal(some county areas are shotgun only etc.) and try to keep the situation safe for you and the officer by keeping your hands free of weapons when he approaches.

I lived in riverside and used to ride the bike trail by the vanburen bridge and there is hogs down there for sure, the like the other advisors said, It is not legal to hunt them, and for your question about deer in the santa ana river bottom, i used to work in corona off of auto center dr, and sitting in my car at lunch break I would see deer jumping around and playing but few and far between in a field not to far form the river, it was cool, I started taking a spooting scope with me and never saw a buck only does with fawns! So there is deer there!

Saw TONS of pig track EVERYWHERE at the hidden valley wildlife area today. Also saw a pack of 5 coyotes, and a single bobcat.
The wildlife down there should really take off with all this rain we have been having.
