Railgunner offers a very good explanation. Franklin 3, Weatherby does offer guns chambered in the standard .300 winchester mag and the .300 winchester short mag. A .300 magnum IS NOT a .300 magnum by any name as you state, regardless of it being a short magnum or not. There IS a difference between the win mag and the weatherby mag and the two CANNOT be interchanged.

ironworker, I hope this is clear now. You need to shoot .300 weatherby mag ammo in your gun, but it can be from whatever brand you prefer.

As a side note I recently bought the Sub-MOA Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Win mag and it shoots .300 Weatherby Mag rounds just fine. JUST KIDDING guys. Obviously I shoot .300 WINCHESTER rounds through it. Anyway out of the box I am getting consistent 1/2 inch groups with the cheapest Federal Power Shok ammo, which by the way is what Weaherby used for the test target that came with the gun, which was a 3/8 inch group. Just info in case anyone is looking at the weapon.

Hey Switch,

Congrats on some nice looking oinkers. Luckily I have access to private land to hunt hogs, but I definitely need to hunt Tejon for the experience, challenge and excitement. You got my blood pumping. Not to mention that it is only a 1/2 hr. drive from my house.

BTW, I don't think a 300 Winmag gun will close on a 300 Wthby round.
Nor will a Short mag close on a "Standard" mag.

You can probably get a 300 Winmag in a 300 Wthby, though.
Make sure the camera is rolling before you shoot and send me a copy of the tape.

Try and be sure what caliber you are shooting and buying ammo for ahead of time.
I've seen a guy show up w/the wrong batch of handloads, wrong rifle for right ammo.

A buddy was hunting w/an old timer that brought 243s for his 308.
Fed and shot fine, but couldn't hit squat. Now if that dude done it the other way. No go!!!!

I hope I didn't jinx myself.
Sorry for the digression.

BTW I've driven by Tejon and it looks all straight up or straight down. Yikes.
Also I think Howa 1500 is a Vanguard by another name.

I knew this damn thread would make me read something. I stand corrected there's more damn cartridges in .300 than you can shake a stick at.

Howa AKA as the Weatherby Vanguard is a very good deal for the price. It has a reputation for good accuracy(good trigger let-off), good barrel and good action. Getting it in .300 Win. Mag. would be a good choice. A .300 Weatherby Magnum caliber would be good also especially if one reloads. Those .300 Magnums whack those pigs with authority. Congratulations again. 'Nuff said.
