Rifle selection poll (pig gun)

I will probably end up using slugs. Esp hearing that a lot of shots are in the 50-60 yard range. I like bird hunting, and using one gun for multiple species is handy.

We shoot a lot of hogs with muzzleloaders. However, we don't usually stick to one gun. I have five different centerfire rifles that work just fine on hogs (oh wait! Six!) They all work as advertised if you hit 'em where you're supposed to.

I showed this to my wife and she, like myfriendis410, said she can't find her favorite hog hunting rig in the poll so she asked me to just put up a picture. What she really likes about this set up is the sausage is INSTANT. She picked it up for a song last year in China last year...

My primary pig / deer gun is a 7mm mag with a 1.5 x 5 scope. I've decided to change to a 3 x 9 scope though. Having said that I voted for the 30-06 with 3 x 9. If I was to do it over again that's what I'd buy. The '06 is just more versatile with a greater variety of bullets and you can find a box of '06 anywhere you go.

I bought a .270 win with a 3-9 scope, for the flat trajectory, and to use it all around. It is a bolt gun. I plan on using it for hogs, and yotes. May be go for bigger game once I get my feet wet.

Well, I'd say that the bolt action 30-06 is the runaway winner.

I shoot a 7mm mag in a Browning BAR, with a 2-10x scope, usually set on 4x; and it knocks em down for the count, shooting 165 TSX. I'm ready to go again!

I've been using handguns for all but a couple hog hunts. I think I might have watched too many John Wayne movies as a kid but if I'm not using a revolver (357 or 460). I would prefer to use a 30-30 with open sights. I'm shying away from optics as I mature and prefer the simplicity of irons. I would like to try mid power AR (6.8/6.5) or one of the really crazy 458 SOCOMs.

My first hog rifle is a Savage package rifle(bolt action)--270 WSM---3-9 scope. Works very well if you have time to find the hogs thru the scope. Missed out on 2 hogs because they were too close. No time to find them in the scope---didn't want to try a freehand shot. Looked at lever actions. Just wanted something different. So...I built a CA legal AR platform rifle with the 450 Bushmaster upper--16" barrel--Eotech sight---and 3x magnifier. Lots-o-fun in the brush!

I do not believe this is a fair question. The caliber, rifle and optics all depend on:

1. The topography (are you shooting at 200 yards plus or in the thick brush?
2. Size of your quarry (smallish meat pigs or monster razorbacks)?
3. Type of hunt (are you humping this rifle for miles or kickin' it in a tree stand)?
4 Your comfort level (does the recoil of a .300WM freak you out or is your consistency with another rifle far superior)?
5. Are you hunting for meat/trophies or are you depredation hunting?

I just don't think there is a good all-around answer.

Ok since there's no .270 bolt action's I'll put down my other gun which is a DPMS LR-308L
but at 10+ pounds it's a bit more than I'd like to tote all day long. In either case, I'm a bit mobility limited so if I can't
road hunt them I'll take my dad's 1954 Winchester Model 70 .270. At about 8lbs I might make it back to camp the same day.

What would you get if you were buying a gun to hunt pigs with. My choice will be different from yours because our hunting habits, and conditions are different. All of your questions above will help you decide what you would buy if you were buying one gun to handle all of your HOG hunting needs. Yes, I should have included a few more choices, and it's hard to lock in a scope size because of all the little variations but unless you are using something real strong most of them are pretty similar to a 3-9 power. But once you post poll questions there's no editing them.


But what would you get? I would buy a 30-30 with open sights. A real nasty one that I wouldn't care about scratches and bumps. In my experience, which reflects all of the conditions you listed above, getting on the hog quickly and pulling the trigger at closer range is more important than being able to reach out to 250 yards across my local hills, which usually have a property line in between.
