Unfortunately a lot of opinions are use what I use. only one person even mentioned how often he may use it. I understand that rifled barrells will out perform a rifled slug or choke. The problem is if you only use it to access particular ta's at FHL than it makes more sense to become proficient with a rifled slug at 80 yards for the two trips per year. 99% of us here are not gun experts because we have limited resources. A gun shop or gunsmith has training on multiple makers and models for many situations. Every time the subject of slugs comes up it is the same answers from the same people that use a particular one. It is a limited gene pool that is unable to to provide variety. if I personally wanted to focus on slug hunting I would look for deer hunting blogs in some of the states that only allow shotguns for hunting. The low numbers of people that exclusively hunt with shotguns and have for decades on here will seriously limit a new person. I try to give them general options so they know whats out there to research.
That's because you can only use LEAD FREE at FHL and VAFB. There ISN'T a lead free rifled slug, only SABOTS. And only 4 of those are Lead free. Remingiton Copper Solids, Ddupleks, Federal barnes TSX's and Winchester XP3's. That's all you get to work with, so yeah, you're going to hear the samething over and over again. Until someone makes a lead free rifled slug that's on the DFW certified list, it's pointless to run Sabots thru a smoothbore. You'd have better luck with a spear. You can thank the CA legislature and the Ridley-Tree Condor act for that. Hell, If I could use lead sabots, I'd be hitting stuff at 200 yds. Rifled shot guns are just like rifles, you have to find what works and if you only have 4 choices, the gene pool is shallow.

Winchester Super X Zinc and the DDupleks Hexolit and Monolit 32 work well with a rifled choke.. 2" at 75 yards all day long without tumbling. People seem to forget that hunting big game with a shotgun is a handicap much like muzzleloader and archery. Your expectations and hunting style have to be different. I only carry slugs when bird hunting and I know that it is a close range option just in case a pig presents an opportunity. I have not put my rifled choke in except on the range since I hunt everything but upland game with my bow. I just like to have the option in the jeep in case I encounter a bow problem.

Just so that you are aware, Winchester Super X Zinc rifled slugs are illegal for hunting inside the Condor zone and are not currently listed by Winchester as ammo for sale. You can still buy the zinc slugs online, but I suspect that when the supply is exhausted, that's it.

I am from Ohio and it is a shotgun, ML, handgun only state for deer hunting. I have been hunting with shotguns for 27 years. I have seen some smoothbore shotguns shoot well at 100 yards with the right slug. However that does no good in the condore zone if there is no ammo that is legal to shoot. Some shotguns also shoot well with choke tubs. It is my opinion that the best bang for your buck is the Mossberg rifled barrel scope combo. If they make one for your shotgun. ( Rem 870, Mossberg 500 and 835 I think ) My 870 shoots 2 inch groupes at 100 yards with the Mossberg barrel with Rem copper solids. Some people get even tighter groupes with their's and the right ammo. I have only thied 3 kinds of slugs from mine and the copper solids were good enough for me. This does not make me a expert , but for $220 you can turn a 870 into a easy 150 yard gun. Sight in dead on at 100 yards hold the crosshair on it's spine at 150 dead pig.

Did you get a barrel yet mr sunset? I just got the mossberg combo for my 870 and I am happy with the accuracy at 50 yds (ran out of sabots before I got to take it out to 100) with Winchester XP3s. It didn't shoot the Remington copper solids well. I haven't found any fedrals yet to try. Hope to try it on a Michael Moore look alike this week.

I just hit up Mossberg themselves for my 930 slug barrel(#93028)... they don't have anything in stock online but call it in and barrels are made to order. They quote you a 5-8week turn around but everyone I speak to says they get theirs in like 2 weeks.

The barrel I ordered normally retails for $199, they initially quoted me $150 direct from them. Then when I actually called in to order from them today the lady said she could just send it without the plastic clamshell they put it in for retail locations and take off another 25 bucks.

So after the 10.99 shipping I paid $135.95 for what's normally a $200+ barrel before shipping and/or taxes.

Really surprising considering the 930 gas system is integrated with the barrel so really more parts go into this barrel then a pump... I've got to think that others are cheaper yet.

The number for Mossberg is 1800-363-3555. It would help to know the part number for what you want, some of the cs employees aren't the brightest(constantly putting you on hold to ask their supervisor questions they should know the answer to) but it's way worth the wait time(faster then what they actually say when on hold) and mediocre service to save so much dough n get a barrel hot off the presses.

cheaper than dirt dot com has some...

7-13 is decent pricing for sabot slugs but personally I wouldn't pick up anything more expensive... don't know much about the 20g options though, didn't realize that's what you were talking about...

btw.. I didn't see you specify if your Mossberg 20g had a rifled slug barrel or is it smooth bore? removable chokes?

rifled barrel.. its a 1986 or 87 country squire. i do not belive it has a choke but i will check. I think its just a vented .. rifled barrel.. pump

My dad won this gun at a D.U. dinner when i was around 10. It sat new in the gun case till i was 12 years old. That xmas i got a gun case from my day. i said "wow.. how cool... now i just need a gun." the Lt.Col said "son thats ur shot gun in the case.. merry christmas" that was the best xmas of my life. we went out that day and my mom, my dad, and i all had our own shot guns to shoot that day. cant get much better than that. love it here.:patiotic-wavin-flag

thanks for the help. i am still looking and will buy sumthing soon.
