After scouting lakes and streams across Northern California this week, I can verify that conditions are the best in eons for the opening of trout season Saturday. Temperatures are forecast to hit the mid-80s Saturday across the west flank of the Sierra, even the 70s at 6,200 feet elevation along the Truckee River near North Tahoe. No wind. Most lakes, up to about 8,000 feet, are clear of ice, and that means all the prime waters are clear in the Eastern Sierra out of Bridgeport, Mammoth Lakes and Bishop. There’s just one catch.
