If you want to try spearfishing in the American River, don't start by purchasing a spear gun, or investigating where to dive for the biggest bass. Instead, you may want to call your attorney first.
Joshua Russo holds his 70 centimeter, rear-handle spear gun in Sacramento. A new statewide regulation allows for the spearfishing of striped bass in the American River, but Sacramento County continues to forbid the possession and use of spear guns on land in most of the river parkway. A few river access points are legal.
