Area waters turn up unusual catches

A rare legal sturgeon landed at Lake Cuyamaca and a huge lobster caught in a hoop net in San Diego Bay topped the weekend's list of strange catches.
Raymond Beven, 80, an Escondido Senior Angler and regular at Lake Cuyamaca, landed a fish of a lifetime yesterday. Using 6-pound test line and Power Bait for trout, Beven hooked and landed a barely legal 25½-pound sturgeon that measured 48½ inches long, a half-inch over the legal minimum size limit for the species.
"We're pretty excited up here to finally get one," said Lake Cuyamaca supervising ranger Hugh Marx.
Marx said the lake's first batch of sturgeon went in as fingerlings six years ago, but he believes this one is from the bunch that was stocked four years ago.
Marx said fishermen regularly see five-footers sunning themselves in the lake, and they seem to get very active in the fall.
"In the past month, a half a dozen people have said they were fishing when all of a sudden a giant fish jumped out of the water in front of them and shocked the living daylights out of them," Marx said. "It's pretty fun stuff."
And then there was the huge lobster. Jimmy Fernandes, a hoop-net fisherman from Point Loma and owner of the P.B. Pub in Pacific Beach, landed a 13-pound lobster in January. He tried his best to save it and give it to the Birch Aquarium, but he never reached them because of the holidays. This time he did.
Fernandes, hoop-netting Friday night in San Diego Bay, landed a 10-pound lobster, and this time, he donated it to the Birch Aquarium.
"It's in a holding tank right now, and they said it will be in the aquarium on Wednesday," Fernandes said.
Fernandes said the 13-pounder, preserved by Lyons & O'Haver Taxidermy, graces a wall in his P.B. Pub. The mount cost $500, so he got away cheap this time by donating it so others can appreciate it, alive.
