Dear Phillip:

SCI Foundation Challenges North American Hunters

TUCSON, Ariz., Oct. 6, 2004 – As part of its ongoing efforts toward ending hunger, the SCI Foundation today announced November 14-20, 2004 as Sportsmen Against Hunger Week, and is challenging sportsmen across North America to give part of their harvests from this hunting season to the hungry in their communities.

“It is within the grasp of sportsmen, as the historical providers of their communities, to end hunger as we know it in North America,” said SCI Foundation Executive Director Tom Riley. “This continent’s abundant wildlife represents a great, untapped resource that can make this goal happen. During the holidays, sportsmen need to take charge and see to it that their responsibilities as community providers are fulfilled.”

Riley continued, “I urge hunters across our continent to empty their freezers of last year’s harvest, or give even a small portion of this year’s harvest to keep their neighbors from going hungry.”

Sportsmen Against Hunger is active in all 50 U.S. states, parts of Canada and in several countries around the world. Launched in 1989, this much-emulated program provides over 230 million meals’ worth of hunter-taken game meat to the needy, and is supported by SCI’s international network of over 150 Chapters, some 45,000 SCI members and other sportsmen who establish local drives, fundraisers and other program support efforts.

This year, the SCI Foundation is providing hunters an extra incentive to give as part of Sportsmen Against Hunger. By donating just five pounds or more of professionally processed meat directly to a relief organization, and using an official Sportsmen Against Hunger “Share Nature’s Bounty” donation form, sportsmen will receive an automatic entry to win one of 50 coveted Sako 75 rifles, each with an approximate retail value of $1,365.

Sportsmen and –women who are unsure where to take their harvests for donation can access the SCI Foundation’s online databases of some 1,300 licensed game processors and over 300 relief organizations across the United States that use wild game to assist local-area hungry. These easy-to-use databases are located at www.sci-foundation.org/humanitarian/sah/, along with a downloadable Adobe PDF file of the Share Nature’s Bounty trifold donation brochure. Many of the processing companies and relief organizations are willing to pay for part or all of the processing and/or transportation costs.
