Seabass Frenzy
6/13/03
Pete Thomas, L.A. Times
The white seabass bite is more than a month late, but in a way it's just in time as the daily bag limit increases from one to three Monday.
Fishing for the big croakers busted wide open at Santa Catalina Island on Sunday and consistent action continued through Wednesday, before subsiding as it usually does after a few days of heavy angling pressure. Another surge in activity is anticipated over the next few days.
For the most part, it has been a predawn bite for those on overnight trips, catching mostly 15- to 25-pound fish.
However, the Sea Spray out of Redondo Sportfishing has been running three-quarter-day trips and on Tuesday one of its anglers bagged a 50-pound seabass -- one of the largest of the week.
Head Hunting
Anglers are urged to contribute the heads of legal-size white seabass (28 inches or longer) to sportfishing landings or other collection centers for use by researchers at the Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute's hatchery in Carlsbad.
Scientists at the facility, in a cooperative program involving the United Anglers of Southern California and various fishing clubs, are involved in a long-term project to determine the feasibility of enhancing the fishery by raising and releasing hatchery fish into the wild.
Small tags are implanted in the cheeks of each fish before they're released and scientists need the help of fishermen in their attempt to recover those tags, which reveal how long the fish have been at liberty and how far they've traveled.
