Had a great trip up to the ranch during the middle of October. Took my girlfriend along and she was great company. She cooked the meals at camp and was a good scout too! I told her to look for white butts.
Brought my bow with to do a little spot and stalk on the mule deer.
Left camp at sunrise. We had just turned out of the driveway when I noticed a lone, good quality buck out in the middle of a stubble field. I backed the truck behind a hill and made the stalk. There was no wind and it was dead calm to hear a pin drop. The buck heard me coming through the stubble but I kept low and moved very slowly. He ran out about 100 yards, stopped and start walking towards me a ways. He walked up to about 250 yards when I put the scope on him. Finally he stopped walking toward me and went broadside to move away when I drilled him. The 130 grain Hornady found it's mark and he only went about 40 yards.
Hunted the rest of the day to fill the doe/kidd tag. Toward sunset we spoted two kidds bedded down in a draw not far from the road. I made the stalk on my hands and knees through tall grass and thought I would be ready with the bi-pod and keep moving until the largest of the two would stand up. It worked as I had hoped and I put the kidd down like at the shooting gallery out at 140 yards. I had 3 left to fill my archery mule deer tag, but couldn't get permission to hunt the buck I was after (monster). My friend let me hunt his grove and there were about 30 whitetail and about 10 mulies that came through but none were in bow range. I didn't fill the muley tag but had some great hikes in vast, scenic country and met some great people. I guess I am sitting here waiting for next year.
