Just got back, what a blast. Gotta do the family thing now, but will post a report and pics later. We went 3-4 and there is still a few staying late to fill their tag.
I just got in. We also went 3 for 4, with everyone having a shot. I would conservatively estimate that I saw 50-60 shootable animals. Throw in the babies and I never learned how to count that high. Speckmisser and Onetrack share the "Wildman of the hunt" award in my book as they each tagged out on Friday and took out any and all those that wanted help the next 2 daysand helped look for hunters animals......hronk
We set up camp and headed out at about 2pm to go look around on Fri. It was pretty damn hot out there and we weren't too convinced that we'd see a whole lot but we were too excited to get out and hunt. We drove over to Tunnis Ridge near the infamous Speckmisser Ridge and got out and glassed the area. We looked for awhile and figured we'd go glass somewhere else. We decided to walk over to the left and get a better vantage point on some of the other ridges. We looked for about five more minutes and started walking back towards the Jeep when out of the depths of hell came a few hogs. We saw approximately 4 come up with a few piglets in the mix and they appeared to be heading towards us. We ranged them at about 420 yards away and approximately 4 to 5 finger ridges over. We made our way across and up, in hopes to get above them for a good shot.
We got to an area where we figured they'd be and were a little worried we passed them up. Kenny (Huntsndives) caught some movement near the trees and sure enough there they were. We told my Dad (Gnn961) to take the first shot as the pig kept giving a good target and the wind started swirling a bit. The sticks came out and he took a sitting position and lined up on one of the pigs in the group. I should have video'd the whole thing, but was H.U.A and took a few photos instead. The shot was 140 yards with the 30-06 and he hit it right near the shoulder and took out the pumper. The wound was a through and through and the pig squealed did a spinning top imitation and was down for the count. First hog taken at about 3pm and we're feeling pretty good. We probably could have waited a little longer and had another pig out of the group, but we didn't want to get winded and lose the shot. The pig was a sow (No, not wet) and was somewhere in the low 100 pound range. We dressed her out and did the long drag back to the jeep.
We drove back to camp, skinned the pig and got back out there for the evening hunt. Kenny and I have had quite a few encounters on Sunday walking down a certain ridge and always say we should do it early next time and never do. Well, we finally did what we always said we'd do and parked up top and walked down. We both had radios and started the hike down. Kenny and my Dad branched off to the right, while I figured I'd take the left side. As I walked down and glassed from high up I tried to get them on the radio to see if they saw anything. Of course, my radio was dead so I tried to see if they were onto something. When I got back to the area where I last saw them I couldn't find them. I decided to drop straight down and then side hill it over to the right and up over the next ridge.
After a long slide down and climb up and over I was now in an area where I could see quite a few ridges. At about ten after eight I was thinking I better see something or I was gonna be outta light real quick. I heard a shot ring out from my left and down and I heard the infamous squeal of death. I heard Kenny yelling pig down and stood ready for a possible stampede heading my way. I waited five minutes and didn't see anything so I continued down. As I walked down I saw a pig come up over the rise to my left and approximately 90 yards away. The pig perched itself there and scanned up above him. I was far enough away where I figured she wouldn't see me, but there wasn't much wind and it appeared that she might of caught my scent. The pig put her nose in the air and then piveted 180 degrees giving me a nice broadside shot. I dropped to my knee and put her noggin in my sights. Pulled the trigger on my 30-06 and the pig rolled over and did the leg kick for a minute or two. I walked up to the pig and saw that I hit her right behind the right ear with an exit on the opposite side. I took a photo of the sow and then started yelling to see if I could let Kenny and my Dad know I had one down too. Of course I heard them, but they couldn't hear me, so I started draggin her down.
