I can say after doing a couple management hunts i am hooked. i will be getting a membership.

yes,I can certainly see the allure and benefits of a membership. like I said, if I could,I would.

Money is my limiting factor... I'll have to enjoy the less game rich blm lands and save up just to even hit one or 2 management hunts for my wife and myself and just hope for the best... I live just south of Tehachapi and have plenty of land to roam with very little investment in gas... but I'm constantly being confronted with reports of overweening odd of taking game anywhere but private land, now I need a membership to even utilize that option to its fullest.

But I'm willing to take what I can get and enjoy it for what it is, experience.

I saw pigs on tejon from the fencline in tehachapi. They were active mostly in the evening. I saw 7-8 hunters not even get out to look where they were. Doubt they were on the road, wasted money for them.

I was up there on the North side this past weekend and had loads of fun. I was lucky enough to get my pig late Friday night as it ran up a hill at a bout 50 yards. It was a boar, not gigantic by any means but a good meat pig. The scale read 84lbs gutted when we got back to the check-in station. I like to give a personal thank you to Kcravnit for pointing us in the right direction. It was my first time to the north side of Tejon and he was kind enough to give some very helpful advice. If anyone is debating whether or not to try a Tejon POR hunt, I would advise to do it in a heart beat. I can't guarantee that you'll get a pig, because the success rate usually hovers around 50%, but I can guarantee that the pigs are out there. And I can probably gurantee that you'll at least see pigs during your hunt weekend. I'll definitely be back.

Ok guys I was up there Friday till 200pm!!!!
Been up here on tejon 8 yrs + and have yet to see a pig even close to this!!!
I do know this, I know where he lives, and how to get there at a better angle sooooooll, stay tuned to next Friday when I commit myself to baggin this pig!!!!!

I like to give a personal thank you to Kcravnit for pointing us in the right direction.

ERRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!.........My advice is "DON'T EVER DRIVE THAT CANYON AGAIN!!!" Hardly any traffic through that canyon, and very few pig signs. The skid pan of my truck picked up a few dents. There are WAY better spots in Tejon to hunt.

Ok guys so went bak up Friday and came in on 138 side. Saw a few small pigs, an a lion but nothing giant.
I went to other side of canyon and glassed the entire valley and live2hunt you must be out your mind!!! Pig sign is everywhere and at 100pm 350yrds below me out came a group of 12 nice pigs!!! There is sign everywhere up there, but you are correct unless u have the right rig u will leave some battle scars!!!

I believe what I saw and I'm no rookie to pig hunting or Tejon. That Tunis Creek is littered with cattles. The north side slopes are unhuntable unless you are a mountain goat and not suitable for pig although some pigs do wander up and down the fingers but not very many of them. The south side slopes are thick with trees and there could be thousands of pigs in there but you won't see them. But judging by the amount of signs I saw coming down to the creek, I doubt there are very many hanging out on those slopes. The creek is the north and south side boundary so if you glass across canyon, you are either glassing an area you cannot hunt or you bent the rule and were on the wrong side of the boundary glassing back. At the top of the ridge on the north side, there are some spots that you can glass down the slopes towards the bottom. There are pig signs going down about 200-300 yards and back up to the ridge top. And 200-300 yards is only about 1/10th of the way down from the top. Oh and one thing, the road on the ridge top was supposed to be open all the way through according to the map, but a gate was locked at the boundary of the inside private owner. Like I said, there are better spots to hunt on Tejon north side than that Tunis Creek.

Interesting thread; getting a membership, going with a guided hunt, or going public lands. I can see reasons for doing all three, so here's my take. I'll leave off the membership reasons as I feel they were well covered, so on to guided. I have never done a guided hunt of any kind, but have several friends that do on a regular basis. For pigs, from what I can gather, if your goal is to fill the freezer, the Jack Ranch at about $600.00 is as close to a sure bet as your going to get (not to discount other guides, but I've seen the results of numerous Jack Ranch hunts, and feel comfortable talking about the Jack. Other guides I know little to nothing about). The Jack usually does 2 hunters to each guide, with a 4 hunter max; in the guides truck. Most of the pig spotting is done from the truck, so based on successful reports from people I know, it doesn't feel like public land hunting at all; but it does fill the freezer as they are running 100% harvest. My opinion of the reason for hiring a guide is to be sure you have the opportunity to take an animal, the guides job is to provide opportunity. IMNSHO, if the guide doesn't provide you with opportunity, than he/she hasn't done their job. Needless to say if you blow the opportunity, that's on you. And, needless to say, a trespass hunt is a totally different story.

IMNSHO, public land hunting for pigs, is for the die hard hunter that gets off on doing it themselves, they want the sanctification of the hard earned payoff, and most often spend more $$$ per pig than if they had gone on a guided hunt; not to mention the wear and tear on gear, boot leather, and vehicle maintenance.

I'd say that each type (Membership, guided, and public land hunting all have their place, it boils down to how each fits your current desires/needs.

As for me, I think I've still got a few good years of public land hunting before considering a membership, but hell, it's starting to feel like it might be fast approaching, as the years now seem to be flying by.

well live2hunt we were back at it again today started at 330am in my drivway and started on desert side of tejon.
at first light we came across 3 pigs crossing the desert with nothing and i mean nothing for them to even hide their tails in for 2 miles in either direction! we caught up to them at the base of the foothills and i popped one at 40yrds after makin a guess at what small knoll they wld come over.

50 mins later we found ourselves heading for tunis creek. after a very scenic tour and lots of fresh sigh everywhere we made it to the top of tunis ridge which is still north-side.
the spring access boundry moves the line over a bit to the top of tunis, and gives us all of the desert side up to the top of beartrap canyon.
we glAssed that hillside where i saw that monster 3 weeks or so ago and saw a few groups feeding on the hillsides.
we decided to drjve basicay the side of tunis and a road that i never knew existed. 5 mins up the road we catch a nice group crossin in the shade and my buddy kevin jumped out with his black powder and boom!!! pig down!!!

we counted well over 50 pigs on tunis at 1030am!

????? from a newbie ??? Is there a joke I don't know about??? Where a member will offer to help out another member?? Here is what happened.. I got a email that asked if I wanted to go to tejon for my first pig hunt. The email said a price I had to pay and that it was going to b a guest pass. I got real excited as anyone would have. I sent a email back right away and said thank you very much and that I would check with the Lt. Col. I waited a few days and nothing. Than I sent a email that said my dad may b bizzy but is the offer still good for me? Mayb I could even have my hunt buddy go up with me in my dads spot. Again a few days even a week or 2 gone by and no email back. So I sent one more email. #3 said that I hope the member is ok and they must have got bizzy and that I hope they are doing well. No big deal or rush, just wanted to check on you and see if your doing ok.? To this day I never got a email back.? I am new so sorry if I did sumthing wrong. Not sure what it could b and or why sumone would be so mean to me or my dad. Thanks for the help and no big deal I guess. We will get out there and get my first pig sumday. Thanks 4 the info guys. forgot to put that the first email was on 4-14. Sorry if I didn't wait long enough. Not sure how this is supposed to work out.

Unless the boundary for the "Wild Pig Management Hunt - North Area" is different from the "North Area for Membership", then Tunis Ridge is on the south side. Tunis Ridge is where JHO's former POR co-ordinator (Speckmisser) always hunt on the south side. Tunis Creek and Sacatara Creek is the north and south boundary from the Central Valley to the dessert for the Management Pig Hunts. If you are at the bottom of Tunis Creek, Tunis Ridge is on the south side and Winters Ridges is on the north side. I've spoken to a few guys that were members and they all told me the boundaries are the same for Memberships and Management Hunts. But I have not been a member before so I only know the boundaries Tejon Ranch gave me for the Management Hunts (both north and south).

I grazed a boar at CHopper's with an arrow right under his pills. The way he spun and ran off I though for sure I had a couple hairy grapes on my broadhead, at least one anyways. No luck. He was broadside when I loosed the arruh and he heard the string and launched the right way, almost the wrong way. I was crestfallen, took me almost 2 hrs of cat & mouse paralleling him to get a shot. Right when he was about to go into a treeline and leave me with no shot he turned and trotted right across in front of me.

2k is the cost and you get 2 pig tags, and 2 guest passes. each additional tag is $350 and guest passes are $100. spring is way better as you get way more land to hunt, but fall up there is priceless.....
good luck on the POR if any of you need any help i have been up every friday and have helped several on the last one bag there pigs on friday.
