Kingwouldbe,
Since most of your bucks are hard horned i am sure you draw a late season archery tag. I drew one this year the same one i drew a few years back. I have a general idea what i am gonna do. I was thinking of trying to locate some does and watch to see if Mr. Big shows up and as a last resort rattling or using scents or a grunt call or doe bleat. Think you could lend me some tips on scoring this year?

HUNTIN FOOL,

Sure I'll give you some pointers, I use everything you said.

First you must find out when the rut go's off in your area, my experience has been the lower elevations start first and it works its way up.

Your right, look for the doe's, I have a technique, I call it get in the circle, what I mean is don't try and put the move on him, just get close and let him come to you.

When the deer are in the rut, they will move vary unpredictable, I've learned this the hard way.

I'm following them for awhile and loose them, only to look back and see them standing where I just was.

I use doe, and buck calls, I raddle some times too.

The only scents I've used with any true success is skunk sent, I have not used it in a long time though, I used it as a cover sent.

I think theirs way to much baloney out there, someone trying to sell some one some thing.

I just play the wind now.

I don't want a buck to come looking for me, unless I'm in a tree, other why's he's way to sharp, and he will problem see me first and blow out.

Look high and look low, until you find a good amount of doe's then just wait, if theirs a hot doe, he'll be there

Now a doe is only in estrus for a vary short time and he will not leave her even if he see you, but if she See's you, she'll drag him out of there.

The bucks know each other, just like school kids know who is the toughest,
so I never sound to tough, just like a freshmen mouthing off to a Senior, the senior is going to come and put him in his place.

So I try and piss them off, acting like I'm really tough, but really small and they want to kick my butt.

so I hope you can use this to smoke a buck.

King,

I am on some deer here in So cal. Have called em in a few times already since Saturday. In my one spot there are a couple of bucks that come when I call. Shot and missed opening morning. Still haven't gotten one with a bow yet. My question is, do you find that they can get wise to a call quickly (especially after I missed). They come in when I call, but like you said they are on high alert and unforntunately I am on the ground. Would you suggest to lay off the call and be more patient. They are working a couple of does right now, which are probably my biggest problem they always wind me first since they get closest to me 1st. They work my spot pretty good, but I just can't seem to put it together just right yet. Also, can I hunt a spot too hard or rather can I be there too much? I have a few spots that have bucks, but the honey hole is where I naturally want to go, would you suggest to only go there every so often or just stay on em relentless until it happens?
Any suggestions would be appreciated and thank your for you time.

Yes, and vary quickly, they will associate the call with you and avoid the area, they will also circle down wind and you'll never see them.

Check out my post # 305 you must play the wind or they will keep busting you and they'll move out of there. If you can glass the area, that's what I would do, until I see which way they are moving, then I would set up for them to come to me. Now if the wind is bad eather go above or below the direction of the wind so they can move to you with out winding you
.

They work my spot pretty good, but I just can't seem to put it together just right yet.

You did get a shot, so that was your mistake, but you did get into range of them so that's good
.

Also, can I hunt a spot too hard or rather can I be there too much?

yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes, If I came to your house and moved a Peace of your furniture you might not notice it the first time, but if I came there every day and moved something , How long do you think I could do it before you notice? However, if I watched you from down the street, and I new what time you left for work, where you went to work, what time you came home, what time you went to bed. What do you think my Chance's are of catching you flat footed some where along your daily routine
.

I have a few spots that have bucks, but the honey hole is where I naturally want to go,

your in the same spot as most would be hunters, not enough good spots to spread your time to, now what if you only had lets say 3 honey holes, you could go there every 3rd day, and that's what your looking for, the deer will stay relaxed and just go about there business.

would you suggest to only go there every so often or just stay on em relentless until it happens?

It probable wont happen, you might get lucky, but your better than luck. If you pressure them, they'll just move to a more remote location and make it that much tougher

Any suggestions would be appreciated and thank your for you time.

KWB i am just curious if you like to shoot compound bows at all, i was a trad archer many years ago but due to shoulder injury it was very painfull to hold the bow at draw with fingers so i had to start shooting a compound with a release to pull more from the wrist instead of fingers and that resolved my shoulder pain issue and kept me in archery. but its been my desire to shoot traditional bow again and now since you joined its help me make up my mind to do so. i am going to buy a recurve in one month with lower poundage and set it up with a release and give it a try, i hope that works i love the simplicity of trad bows and i want to take one out to the feild and hunt again the traditional way , thanks for joining JHO KWB........................tra
