Good question coolcat, actually they got hogs there and I got into 3 at 25 yard for about 15-20 minutes but never had a shot, they winded me and jammed out of there

It has begun again.

"A" zone opener 7-12-08 & it's my birthday, in the hills about an hour before sunrise, 15 minutes after first light I glass a spike, well that's at least one deer.

Vance and I are at a spot we call the dragons back sitting at the eagles roost working the 10x42s picking everything apart, bam!! I got a buck, Vance Say's where ? I point it out, Vance Say's, he's tall, he's heavy, he's wide, he's a 5x4, go kill him.

We have a saying, "he who spots it, stocks it" I plan my stock, it's almost a mile to get to him, it's hot steep and brushy, the first 2/3s go's pretty fast, I bump into a spike fork on the way and I have to let him move off so he wont spook the big boy.

Vance keeps glassing him while I put the stock on him, at about 150 yard away I glass Vance and he motions to me he has bedded down near where I saw him when I left, the brush is so dry and loud I have to move like a snail, I finally get to a spot I think I might be able to glass him, no! so I move a little closer, no! so a little close, still cant find him, I look back to Vance, he still motions he's in his bed.

I move closer to the ledge and bam!! there he is, in his bed, all I can see is his horns sticking out of the grass and brush, he is almost invisible except his horns.

I move even slower to a rock pile to my left, it's like being a gymnast in supper slow motion, my body was contorted sliding between sticks with out making any noise.

I made it, but I was still to far away, the brush was so loud that I could not get any close, I needed him to help me by getting out of his bed and moving my way just a little.

He got up about 10 minutes after I got to my rock pile, he started to jack up the brush next to his bed, yes he was out of velvet and was tearing up the brush, he was a lot bigger than I first thought.

He bedded back down facing the other way, I thought, if I can get a little closer the next time he gets up I'll have a good shot, he got up again before I could get any closer and did the same thing, he was vary aggressive tearing up the brush, he should still be in velvet and here he is looking like the rut is next week.

Well, about 3 1/2-4 hours latter I finally get a shot at him, it Sal's over his back, it's a steep down hill shot, he never knew he was shot at, he moved to his left and down a little and my second arrow was on it's way, the feathers touch his back this time and he looked like someone pinched his butt

It's hard when you put in so much effort to kill a buck of this caliber, he would-be in the upper 140s maybe low 150s, was I disappointed ? sure it hurts, but I love it, it's the challenge that I love, I love it because it is hard, if it was easy, every one could do it and the challenge and difficulty wouldn't be there.

One of my friends said to me, don't you wish you had a compound, I bet you would of killed it if you had a compound, I said to him, I wouldn't trade a spike fork killed with a trad-bow for the state record shot with a compound, but then again, thats just me.

Dave:

If you would have had one of those stoggies in your mouth, you might have "smoked" him!It (cigar) was obviously a good "aiming" supplement for you at the state broadhead when you ruled your division and took home the first place trophy! I suspect we'll be seeing some trophy field photos before long.......thanks for the story.

Roy,

That's to funny,
<
because you read my mind. LOL

At one time as I was patiently waiting,
<
I thought " do you think you can sneak back to your pack and get a stooge" I knew I had a few cigars in my pack that I left 100 yards back.

Next time I got to remember to put one in my pocket, LOL

Thanks to you Roy and the Big Game committee for putting on a great broad-head shoot.
