It was a hot one no doubt about it, over 100 during the day. And that was special guest guide Donnie's Land Cruiser. His dad bought that back in 1978 (year I was born) and they have had it ever since.
The other two hogs weighed about 180 and 170 judging by their hanging weights at the locker. The last sow I took over there was 170 on the hoof and had a hanging weight of 63 pounds. The other two that are in the pictures had hanging weights of 74 pounds and 67 pounds.
It is probably going to be my last one up there for a while. That was one hell of a weekend, within 12 hours we had over 800 pounds of pork down on the ground. I dunno though, might be able to sneak back up in September. That is if Randy lets me back on the ranch after I missed one almost close enough to put a rope around. One thing about it though... Justin (aka mountian goat) and I are like ninjas when it comes to the spot and stalk. Maybe next time I will try some throwing stars instead of bullets.
Friday afternoon everyone arrived at the ranch, unpacked, filled out the paperwork and let the B.S. session get started as we had a few hours before heading out for the first evening's hunt. Now before we got up there my plan was to hang out near the hay field and shoot my pig the first night... then hang out and party the rest of the weekend. Well that isn't what happened. After talking to Randy and the guys we decided that me and 2 others would head up the mountian, Donnie and one guy would head down to the flats on the lower end of the ranch with Justin and two guys setting up on the hay field.
So when it was time to head out we loaded up in the jeep and headed out for our adventure! Mark, Larry, Randy(guide) and I took our time getting back to where we were going to set up. We checked all the water holes on the way but weren't lucky enough to catch one cooling off in the hundred plus heat. Once we reached the very back pond we stopped to do a litte glassing. It was still a little early but you never know right? Well nothing was moving yet so we decided to get to our spots were going to spend the evening. On our way there Randy spoted a group making there way up from a little spring. Well here we go boys the chase was about to start, there were a few problems. It was hotter than hell, pigs were headed up hill and the wind was blowing right at them. When Randy had spotted them he goes, "well there they are boys, but how the hell are we going to get'em?" We parked the jeep and Randy layed out the plan for the stalk. In order to get the wind in our favor we were going to have to go around the mountian and catch them from the side. But in doing so we would loose complete sight of them until we were almost ready to shoot. It was early and we were fresh so let's do it! While it when we got up there and started around they were gone without a trace. I am still amazed at how fast they can disappear when you take your eyes off them, but that is how they survive in the wild and it wasn't their day to go. We loaded back up dropped Larry off to glass while Randy took Mark and I to the "honey hole." Randy dropped us off and went back to Larry. Mark and I hiked down to where we had a nice view of the surrounding terrain. After a few hours of nada it was dark, Randy and Larry picked us up and we headed back to camp were we hoped some of the other boys had a little better luck.
Sure enough when we reached the highest peak on the ranch we saw that the skinning light was on! Someone had scored but we had no idea what or how many. Just as we were almost back to the ranch two of the quads were back up a little ways in the canyon by the hay field and cabin I might add. Randy(not the guide) and Frank had scored and scored big! Randy and Frank killed two trophy boars weighing in at 250 and 248. We teased Frank about the fact that if he hadn't shot his three times it might have been 250 also. The boars were running together with a third calico boar about the same time. Randy shot his first and then Frank made a play for his. What a double for the first night. The ranch was living up to the hype and I couldn't hacve been happier for my guys. To top it off it was Randy's first hog and Frank's birthday! Well the celebration was on and we were a third of our way to meeting our quota.
Thanks again for sharing the pics and story. I always look forward to reading about your weekends at RNJs. Even though this time wasn't completely sucessful it looks and sounds like you had a good time. It had to hot as hell there...
