Fishing holes exposed: A couple things are different about the Definitive Guide to Fishing in Southern California, the most recent fishing guide book on the market: Photos accompany most lakes and creeks that are reviewed and author Chris Shaffer, who has fished each locale, goes to great lengths to be candid.
"I tell the truth," he said.
On Puddingstone Reservoir: "We tried to fish it on a weekend in June and it looked like Lake Havasu during spring break."
On Irvine Lake: "With continuous plants year around, you'd think the action would never stop, but on my last five occasions my bait remained untouched. To tell you the truth, in the five times I've been there I've only snagged one crappie."
On Laguna Niguel Lake: "The trout at Laguna Niguel are an experience you can't find anywhere else in Southern California."
On Trabuco Creek: "I was miserable. Let's just say the fishing was about as much fun as the drive (to the creek on the poorly maintained dirt road)."
For what it's worth, Shaffer ranked Laguna Niguel Lake a 10, Santa Ana River Lakes a 9 and Irvine Lake a 6 on a 1-to-10 scale, 10 being best. Check it out at www.fishingcalifornia.net
