Well, today is a day I won't soon forget. I've been on a total of 3 big game hunts, 2 elk and 1 deer. None of those had been successful. Since moving to CO, I'd gone on a few antelope hunts with COHunter as a tag along but didn't have the points to draw a tag.

After building up the points, I finally drew my buck tag. I had the access and COHunter had done some scouting and had seen small groups in the area. So with great anticipation I woke up this morning with a hop in my step. We met for a quick cup of joe, saw several other hunters, and were on our way.

We arrived on the property and went to set up where we had seen goats come down in the past. After about a little bit we didn't see any and started to glass the hillsides. We spotted a buck with 2 does and decided to give them a sneak.

As we got closer the buck was on the top of the hill side and I couldn't see anything but sky. No shot there, but COHunter had spotted a another buck come in from the backside of us. As we watch the 2nd buck the 1st slips out of sight. Buy the time we get in position the 2nd buck has moved to the adjacent property and is free and clear.

We head back to where the 1st buck was and try and get a line on where he went. We got to the top of the rise where I had last seen him and I spot him about 150yds out. CO is watching the backside for any new bucks and I get ready for the buck out front. I'm kind of peeking out from behind a small shrub and there must have been something that piqued the bucks interest because he starts coming in at a trot. I decide to see how close he gets and buck fever is setting in. I can hear my heart beating inside my head.

When he gets to around 75 yds I decide that's close enough. I set up for my shot and get ready to squeeze. I tell myself just breath, but the moment gets to me and I pull and go a little high. For some reason the buck trots in closer, I pull the bolt, put a fresh one in and take aim. He's broadside and I pull. *Click..... The silence seems like forever. I think I'd better pull the bolt and get a fresh one in the chamber. I get one in, set up free hand and he's between broadside and 1/4'd. Off hand, pull the trigger, boom....

I can see he's hit in the shoulder. He runs about 30yds and is down. I turn to COHunter and get the congratulatory high 5!! My first big game animal is down and the feeling is nothing I've ever felt with birds. This is a whole new ball game. I am 100% hooked now. :panic:

Nice respectable buck for your first. Congrats!

The wife and I are leaving tomorrow for a week at the ranch. We have turned the hunt into our annual vacation. With all of her foul weather gear you would think we are huntin' polar bears! We are bringing enough food to feed the 7th cavalry. But she cooks up some fine food.

Nice job there! Thanks for sharing your experience!

Got to go...doin' honey do this and that.

P.S. next year never seems to come fast enough

WAY kewl, Z! You da MAN! I've never whacked a speed goat and it's on my list. I'm no expert by any stretch, but I'm guessing that's no dink.

I can hear my heart beating inside my head.
That's what it's ALL about. I've said before that if this ever stops, I should just hang it up.

Cool bean, man and I'm officially jealous!
