Things might be looking up for anglers

Exploring the great outdoors for notes, quotes and anecdotes ...
If the deal goes through whereby the Metropolitan Water District stores emergency water in Irvine Lake, anglers will enjoy a lake that is always full or close to it.
The lake, down 60 feet over the winter, is so high now that the road to the west shore has been closed. The boat dock is on the south shore near the boat ramp by the entrance to Woody's Cove.
This new lake-level high will become the lake-level low if the Metro deal goes through as expected.
"There was 6,000-acre feet in the lake," lake manager Dave Noyes said. "Now it won't get below 11,000 or 12,000 acre feet. It will always be up. The downside is, we'd lose the motocross (park)."
Eastern Sierra Trout Opener update: Ice fishing at South Lake is iffy and out of the question at Lake Sabrina, which only had a small amount of ice in the back, according to a report from Bishop Creek Resorts. The road to South Lake is open, but blue pools over much of the lake a couple of weekends ago signal unsafe conditions. Caution is urged.
The Department of Water and Power has posted signs temporarily closing roads in the burn area of the Owens River near Bishop.
"We ask the public to refrain from activities that could cause further harm to the vegetation, fishery, wildlife habitat and water quality," a spokesman said. "This includes such things as driving and parking vehicles off existing roads, recreating in sensitive areas, and leaving trash."
Eastern Sierra Alternative I: Santa Ana River Lakes plans to stock the lakes with 4,000 pounds of nothing but "huge trophy trout" Wednesday night. SARL is dubbing its four-day fishing weekend "Our Sierra Grand Opener."
Eastern Sierra Alternative II: Irvine Lake is giving away tackle boxes to the first 125 kids Saturday and Sunday at the Spring Trout Classic, which features lots of prizes.
Ten thousand pounds of trout (including 4,000 pounds of steelhead trout) will be stocked this week before the event with 1,000 pounds going into the lagoon.
More game wardens are on the way: Thirty-four cadets are enrolled in the warden academy at Napa Valley College. That's twice the number of last year's academy class. Six cadets are female, incidentally.
