Tough going out there

Been out 4 times,from.opening day too Nov 28th.first 3 times absolutely nothing,no sounds,no signs,4 time,seen small Covey poss 8 chuckar ,then they were gone.i hunt chuckar, quail.Have Not Shot Gun Yet.Some bad storms came through,washed out the dirt roads,pools everywhere.Every people ive seen said same thing.This is the worst I've encountered in 15 years...garlock,randsburg area,California

Saw many around end of September. Not many now. I think that big rain and snow we had last month may have affected things?

Mild 2024-2025 winter in SW means bird numbers are well down. Maybe next year will be different if good spells of precipitation continue. Haven't had a chance to hunt yet, but in one area I plan to visit I saw several quail, doves, and cottontails (this was just before season opened, harvesting pine nuts).

Did another hunt today..DEC 8TH.my usual spots with a few more trial areas to broaden my search.Sadly this outing,Nothing!..In desperation too find something,went too JAWBONE area.Dirt roads,whilst they had been graded,still lots of damage from rains.However whilst driving came upon a Covey of about 10 quail walking across the road.Parked up, gun out,I know once they get back into the sage brush,probably won't be seen again.But i had to put in.the effort and try and yes they were gone,not to be heard or seen,even with trying my quail call.But I did see birds.What seemed strange to me was they were very small, Definitely a late hatch.My guess 6-8 weeks old.This being just general info.

jawbone closed road sign Nov2 so we did S El Paso mtns near garlock, 0 quail tracks calls. Nice to see Quail forever put in some work out there. Thanks
The roads were passable but pretty washed out in places

Its been so slow.
I have busted exactly one covey of quail and that was many weeks ago. Havent seen a single quail since.
Chukar seem to have vanished also.
Last few times out have only seen a couple random singles.
Red Mountain, Walker Pass, Ord Mountain, Hole in the Wall, Lucerne, Mid-Hills and Kelbaker Rd....all NADA, Zilch. Saw more bighorn sheep than birds. Even the fishing has gone slow.
Guess might as well start looking for dove in the IV.

Agreed i have also been in most of those areas we have found birds but small numbers and very jumpy
