I went into turners today (west covina store) with the thought of maybe buying a gun, they have a add for the Tikka whitetail, first of all they list in there add 6-7 different Cal. to choose from fist day of add they had one in 30-06, so I said to the salesman lets see it figuring if I like it i'll go over to Chino and pick one out, the guy pulls the bolt hands it to me without the bolt in gun, so I shoulder it and he yell point it at the ceiling that's what the targets are there for like i'm suppose to know, I pulled the gun down said if deer flew I would point it up how could I get a feel for it point it up he did not even answer, I said could you put the bolt in the gun, he said it is my practice not to I told him one I would like to work the action two I want to pull the trigger, I have never in my life ever bought a gun without doing either, to me it's same as buying a car and not taking it for a test drive, he said no because if someone wanted to buy it they might not want a gun that the action had been worked back and forth and the trigger pulled, I said what do you think they do at the factory before it leaves, this FH had the thought that this gun has never been fired or the trigger pulled, I told the guy as I walked out if I wanted this kind of service I would just buy it off the internet.

I WELL NEVER BUY ANOTHER GUN AT TURNERS, I may never go into there store again except to buy a hunting or fishing lic. or stamps, or there lost leader that they sometime have on ammo and I said MAYBE, they have lost a half a$$ customer.

Do you remember the name of the salesman? Or a brief description of him? I am curious to know who the knuckle head was so that I can avoid him in the future when I go there.

I don't know his name but he is a older guy maybe late 30's 40's dark hair I have seen him there a few times before he seems real friendly when I walked up, I have no clue if this is his policy or store or corp.I bought a gun at there SB store about 2mo ago and it was point it where I wanted work the bolt and pull the trigger. so i'm thinking it is store policy or his, I'm done with these meatheads, I looked last night on the net and found a FFL dealer who has choice of caliber for $367.00 + $15.00 shipping and when I get it here all I'll pay is dros fee's as I have a source with a FFL and he will paper work it for free for me.

There is a growing number of people who agree with you , I am one of them and I know several more, The service in turners has been getting worse and worse .It has started to seem like the gun stores think it is a privalage for you to be in there and it is even worse when I am in my work clothes. I was in fowlers a few days ago for 20 minutes and for some of that time I was the only customer and was still never offered any help.

I would think that the lady who runs/owns Turner's (can't remember her name) might be interested in reading several of the back threads here.  Anyone know her?  As much as I dislike their service, I'd hate to see them go the way of B&B and Pony Express.

Hey, at least the guy behind the counter acknowledged your presence.

Last time I was in Fowler's (and it was truely the last time), the people behind the counter wouldn't even look at me, and wouldn't respond when I asked about something. They told me, the only customer in the store, that maybe I could look at a gun 'later'.

Being the only customer in Fowler's seems like a common occurance.

The only time I get ANY service at Turner's is when they follow me around to make sure I'm not pocketing anything. I send the people following me on errands to find the stuff I'm looking for.

I, too, took a look at the Tikka Whitetail going on sale there at Turner's. The guy behind the counter decided that he'd take that the opportunity to call another store to check on some personal item he wanted. After a few minutes he came over and ripped the gun out of my hands, put it back, and went back to his important phone call.

If I hadn't known better, I'd almost had thought he didn't want me there.

At least he didn't take the bolt out first.

You know where I've gotten good service and good prices? Centerfire. Aside from the guy not knowing the difference between IMR4064 and AA4064, of course.

I know this thread is about Turners but since we're on the the subject.....Believe it or not here in PA i get really good service at our local Gander Mountain. A lot of it has to do with the fact that the guy running the firearm section is a very knowledgable shooter himself and competes in the local benchrest club. He goes out of his way to make sure you get what you want and at the best price in the area. I thought buying guns at gander was gonna be a joke but I've purchased one there and will go back. I really like the very small local gun shop a couple miles from my house but the owner told me up front that he wouldn't be able to get the gun i was looking  for very quickly and i didn't want to to wait 45 days. I bought the gun at gander and the scope from him :wink-yellow:

Turners is bad on their service for sure. Fowlers and Stockade (same owner) is much worse. They act like your not even there / could care less.  Xcaliber owner is just plain strange, but I can handle / tolerate him for some unknown reason.

Songdog, I cannot recall the owners name of Turners, however might be able to find out on their website, perhaps even getting to Email her?!?!  I think letting Turners know how we feel is a good idea and may bring about a positive change, hopefully?!  As we all know, we really cannot afford to lose a major store like that, whether we like them or not.

A shame how our rights & sport has taken such a beating. Then again, look how our country has gone done in many areas. Sad!

Turner's has gone thru a few owners.  Originally it was "Andrews" and owned by Bill Andrews,(who now has the concession at Santa Ana River Lakes, Corona Lakes, and Anaheim Lake).  He lost the stores in a divorce and his ex married a guy named Jesse Turner, hence the name change.  Several years later Bill bought the chain back and kept the "Turners" name.  The present c.e.o. is his daughter, I think it's Shirley Andrews.  Their corporate office is in Chino, so she can be contacted there, or maybe thru their website.
Their main attraction is that they run good sales, and in some cases their the only game in town.  We sure could use some Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas in California.

I'm 54 so maybe I should have said younger then I 30's-40's LOL, but most of Turners no knowlege salespeople are kids to me 20's so when I see someone that looks a little older I think I might really get some help WRONG.

I agree with Fowlers & the Stockade if you don't stand in front of them and beg like a puppy forget about getting waited on and NEVER go there at lunch time one day at Fowlers I stood at the cashout counter for 10+ min while the bunch of them fought over who got what for lunch, I finely said to one of them who stuck there head out can I pay for this or is it free, don't ever go there and stand in the reloading area and expect to get waited on you again have to go play puppy even though I would like to play pit bull and grab them by the throat.

Yes the guy at Xcaliber he goes to the beat of his own drum but for some reason I don't mind him either, and at least he know's what he is talking about a wait's on you.

Yes you are right we can't afford to lose any more gun shops, i'm really not sure I feel the same about turners though, if they went under it would be at there own doing.

I have a good friend who is a asst. mgr. with then and they are getting him ready for his own store i'll see him next week i'm going to say something to him, i'm curious to find out if this is corp policy or store or salesman.

I have bought 2 guns at Turners in Norwalk, and have no complaints about their service. I have NEVER seen them remove a bolt or tell you that you can't pull the trigger though.

They have always been quick to show me the gun I wanted to see (unless they were all busy with other customers like on a saturday, but even then, they got to me as soon as practicaly possible).

Heck, they didn't even show any irritation with me taking a couple months to decide which handgun I wanted. I was coming in weekly, asking to fondle just about everything on the shelf. They seemed happy to show me whatever I wanted.

Of course they check the chamber before they hand it over, but not remove the bolt.

With that kind of treatment, I would feel the same way as you huntducks.

I guess either the Norwalk store is run a little better or I've just been lucky.

Hey Huntducks, we are both the same age then.  Ain't it awful? lol

You'r right about Xcaliber, but one thing I left out is, he is nice though. I found out once you start buying from him (& the sooner the better(ha), he tolerates (us) more. Funny, but true. And you are right, he is definitely one of the more knowledgeable ones and when you actually get him to talking you can't get him to shut up. lol

Will also be interesting what your friend has to say on Turners....

I totally agree with JBarn3, I have had the same exact experiences as he has, I have never had a bolt removed, they only check and make sure that there is no round in the chamber (Normal practice), that's why it seemed rare to me your case "huntducks", specially because that is the same store that go to, the West Covina one.
While I was there yesterday picking up a special order, I told the manager there Mike and the assistant manager Sam about your problem, and they felt bad about your incident and they asked to tell you to go back and ask for either one and that they will personally take care of you along with an apology for the bad service you got.
Now, when your friend gets his store, are we gonna get brakes??:bgaqua::bgaqua:

I can't tell you the number of times I've walked into a Turners store and been ignored. I do have to admit every once in awhile the have a great sale. That is why I keep going back. As far as Fowlers/Stockade, the service I've had has been hit/miss. I find that I usually get better service though from the stockade.

Frank and others,

I would think you should be obligated to contact the owners concerning the treatment you recieved so the chiefs can remind the braves why they have a job...... because of you!

If all of you were to contact the owner/management and the situation remaind un-changed, *THEN* Flush them down the toilet (but make your voice heard first) If that does not work then by taking your hard earned money else where, but dont take this laying down.....

They will get the point sooner or later.....

Just my 2 cents, FWIW 'o)

Hummpf!!!  Good luck contacting anyone by e-mail.  I've sent several over the past few years asking/complaining about knowledgable service etc. and NEVER had any response.  I avoid Turner's like the plague now.  Period.  They are the reason I do most (if not all) the work on my firearms myself.  It's expensive investing in the tools, jigs, stones, gauges and such.  But I guess I got so fed up with their crappy service, condescending attitude, and piss poor selection I figured I'd just do it myself.  At least that way I know it's done the way I want it.   I don't want to see any gun shops go under...but I cring when someone says gunshop and Turner's in the same breath...'cause they ain't one.  Besides, call me stubborn, but I prefer to be self suffcient and not have to rely on people like that.  Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox now.... < shuffle >  < shuffle >

Last year when I was trying to buy my NEF I went to turners , I worked with them for 3 weeks trying to buy a gun (money in hand) . I got fed up and emailed every person on there homepage and got responses from Bill Ortiz but even he could not get the head salesman in the chino store motivated enough to order a gun for me . I belive that since they cant make much money on a $200 rifle he did not want to spend any time on it. If it was a $2000 rifle I bet it would have been there promptly.
I bought it at Wally mart from a sales person that had almost no knowledge of what he was doing and I saved 15%

Sent this to Turners by email to Bill Ortiz the Director of operations ,Shirley the Prsident and Gene the vice president
The question I have asked of them in the past is How much do they have to spend in advertising to replace each of us as customers but I never got a awsner to this question.
It cost so little to keep a customer from coming back!!
