Hi Patrick,

I'm not sure how it's going to be next week but this week we have TA's 1 thru 7, 10/13, 29 & 30. Already one pig taken in 10/13 at around 8am this morning. It's hard to say what's going to happen week to week. I had a hard enough time trying to get this week's training area availability but I'll keep you all posted.

By the way, you guys can meet the new girl Rochelle at the window! She's really nice and cheerful. :)

Thank you for the quick reply Rannie! I talked to you on the phone and wanted to double check something real quick. My buddy and I are heading up from San Diego and I asked you about the forms and whether or not we needed to send them in and you said to just bring them with us, is that still ok? Also, we are coming up on Friday, is there any campsites around the area and if so what are the costs? And one more thing what zones are the rifle zones, and can you take a pig with a handgun up there?

Thanks!

Patrick

P.S. Its good to know that more training areas are opening up!

Larrysogla- you're very welcome & Rochelle is looking forward to meeting everyone :) She's a former Park Ranger and she was a dispatcher from FHL LEA (Law Enforcement Activity).

Greatwhite (Patrick) - Yes, it is still fine that you bring your form and money order/cashier's check at the window and I will process you there. If anyone else is reading this and needs a permit, I will process you at the window as well... just let me know you're a JHO member

As for campsites, there is a primitive campsite right in front of the registration building. I'm not sure how much it is... maybe $10?

And as for handguns, they may be used per state regulations, but must have barrels 6” (six inches) or longer and be .38 caliber or larger (.243 or larger in rifle caliber used for handguns). Almost all of the areas are rifle areas except TA's 3 (archery only), and TA's 29 & 30 (archery, shotgun, & muzzleloader weapons only).

Rannie,

I am trying to put on a pig hunt for disabled veterans and persons with disabilities. Do you know of a contact at FHL that I might get in touch with and make this happen?

Thanks rannie,

I have been trying to find a ranch in Cal to do this but haven't had any interest, maybe FHL would like to help out.

Thanks again

Hi Patrick...

This weekend was fun... some hunters (Ernie, Pat, and Tom) who are also good friends of mine, were out in TA 29 and was irritated at these 5 hunters who were shooting rounds off like crazy... so they call me up at the office and report the suspicious behavior (there were no jack rabbits around so they were wondering what could they be shooting at). Since TA 29 is a park and walk in area, I ask them to follow them out to their vehicle and get me a license plate number so I can call the Game Warden. Thirty minutes go by and finally Pat calls me back and gives me the License Plate number of their SUV and confirms that they were shooting cottontails because Ernie had a digital camera and took pics, so I call up the Game Warden and he's on his way...

Sure enough, the vehicle that my friends had described pulls up in front of the Registration office with the 5 suspects... they get out of their SUV and ALL of them head to the back of the truck and start fumbling around, probably trying to make sure none of their harvest is visible. Mind you, the new girl we hired just came from the FHL police department as a dispatcher and she knew all about what to do. So, after 5 guys are done doing whatever it was in their trunk, they start walking to our window.

They turn out to be hispanic and only one of them knew english. He comes over to my window. He asks if they could change to TA 4 and I said sure. Rochelle and I didn't even have to say a word to each other, we knew we were going to try to stall them until the Game Warden came. So we make conversation with the only enlish speaking guy. He even tries to bribe us $100 each if we would save them a good spot during deer season. We asked him "So, any luck out in 29?" and he says "Nah, nothing out there." and I say "Really, nothing at all?" and he says "Nothing"... Our stalling doesn't work so they start to head back to their truck, but that one guy smirks and turns around one last time and tells me "Oh yeah, there were cottontail." Rochelle and I mumble under our breath, "yeah I bet there were."
<

So anyways, those guys are about to leave but luckily they decide to go back to their camp site. A few minutes later, my friends show up and Ernie shows me the pictures he took. They were pictures of cottontail rabbits with only the fur left on the ground. Those hunters had removed the meat and left the skin thinking they could get away with it if their vehicle had to be searched. AND he took pictures of the hunters shooting the cottontail rabbits! Ernie said he was scared they might pull their shotguns at him but he was already too pissed to care because he said that hunters like them ruin it for the good hunters who obide by the rules. Good for Ernie but I don't recommend that, too dangerous especially all 5 of them were armed.

All of a sudden, we see the Game Warden speeding all the way to the registration office, jumps out and right away Ernie walks up to him and shows him the pictures. I tell the Game Warden that they are out in the camp grounds and he calls for back up and goes to the 5 suspects's camp site.

Anyways, not only did those poachers have cottontail, they had quail too! Their guns were confiscated, they were sited, and now they are banned from FHL forever. Imagine the fines they are going to have to pay. But it the excitement of the day and it was entertainment for all the hunters in the campgrounds. Everyone kept coming to the registration office saying "How stupiddddd! Couldn't they have waited?"

OOh... to answer your question, 3 pigs were taken this weekend - 1 in 29, 1 in 30, and 1 in 10/13.

Hi Rannie and Rochelle,

Great job!

Is there a way we can direct your superiors to this particular forum?

I just felt that good deeds should not go unrecognized -- and crimes go unpunished (like those b...... who got cited).

Keep up the good work.

We just think it's so unfair that some people think they can get away with that kind of stuff. There are reasons for hunting seasons such as to give the animals fair chase. Plus, just like Ernie said, it's not fair to the hunters who obide by the rules.

Hope to see you all soon... I'm still waiting on what's going to be open this weekend... I'll update the phone recording around 4-5pm if anyone is wondering. =)

I am planning on heading up to FHL this on Friday. Can anyone tell me what the camping situation is like? Do you need to reserve a spot? are campfires or stoves allowed? Is it against any regulations to have alcohal in your truck/camper at the campsite (it's probably going to be hot this weekend and it sure would be nice to have a cold one in the evening after hunting all day)?
<

Also, it says you can check in on Friday afternoons, can you hunt then as well or do you have to wait until Saturday? If not can you at least scout the area out that you register for?

Thanks for any help, just want to be sure.

Hi bjake21,

Pre-registration for weekend hunting are on Fridays from 3pm to 7pm. Because FHL is a military installation and for security reasons, you cannot enter any training area before the weekend. They're really strict on that over here. But when you get to the registration office, let us know you're new and we'll be glad to assist you. We'll give you maps and let you know the rules and regs before you go out to hunt or whatever other questions you may have.

We don't handle the campsites but maybe some of the JHO members can help you. All I know is it's a first come first serve, no reservations. And I believe it's $10 a day? I've seen campfires and stoves so I'm guessing it's okay.

See you tomorrow then!

Rannie
