Sarah Jones had seven bucks pass by her stand on the opening day of archery deer season. She shot one, a nine-pointer, and was home in time to share breakfast with her 3-year-old son, Alex.
It helped that she shot the buck early in the day. Also that she was bowhunting less than five minutes from her home well within Kansas City, Mo.
Jones and her father, Allen Swicegood, hunt a privately-owned parcel of ground within the city limits as part of the Missouri Department of Conservation's urban hunt program.
It's one of several programs the department has sponsored for more than a decade to keep urban deer populations under control and offer sportsmen opportunities for quality hunts close to home.
Joe DeBold, department urban wildlife biologist, said the program has 74 private properties enrolled. Each must be at least five acres and meet other department criteria. The hunts are archery-only.
